Traveling Scientist information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Traveling Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Traveling Scientist, you need a strong background in scientific research, data analysis, and subject-matter expertise, typically supported by an advanced degree in a relevant scientific field. Familiarity with laboratory and field research equipment, as well as proficiency in data management and statistical software, is essential. Excellent communication skills, adaptability, and cultural awareness are crucial soft skills for collaborating internationally and presenting findings to diverse audiences. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure accurate research, effective cross-cultural collaboration, and successful dissemination of scientific results in varied environments.

How do traveling scientists typically manage collaboration with research teams across different locations?

Traveling scientists often work with multiple research teams, both remotely and onsite. Effective communication is key, so they regularly use digital collaboration tools, schedule virtual meetings, and maintain clear documentation of their findings. Coordinating across time zones and adapting to diverse lab environments can be challenging, but these experiences also foster adaptability and build a broad professional network. Many organizations support traveling scientists by providing logistical assistance and structured collaboration processes.

What are traveling scientists?

Traveling scientists are professionals who conduct scientific research and experiments in different locations around the world, rather than being based in a single laboratory or institution. They may work on field studies, collect data from various environments, and collaborate with local researchers or organizations. This role often involves extensive travel to remote or unique locations to study specific phenomena, ecosystems, or conduct global research projects. Traveling scientists can be found in disciplines such as biology, geology, environmental science, and more. Their work is crucial for advancing scientific understanding in diverse and often under-studied areas.

What is the difference between Traveling Scientist vs Field Researcher?

AspectTraveling ScientistField Researcher
Required CredentialsTypically requires a master's or Ph.D. in a scientific disciplineOften requires a bachelor's or master's degree in related field
Work EnvironmentConducts research across multiple locations, often traveling between sitesWorks primarily outdoors or at specific field sites
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in academia, biotech, environmental agencies, and pharmaceutical companiesCommon in environmental, ecological, and agricultural research

Traveling Scientists and Field Researchers both conduct scientific work outside traditional labs, but Traveling Scientists typically travel between multiple locations and may have advanced degrees, while Field Researchers focus on specific sites, often with less emphasis on travel. Both roles are essential in research industries, but their work environments and credentials differ slightly.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Domo's AI and Data Products Platform lets people channel AI and data into innovative uses that deliver a measurable impact. Anyone can use Domo to prepare, analyze, visualize, automate, and build data products that are amplified by AI.

POSITION SUMMARY

Sr. Data Scientists at Domo are client-facing experts who work with Domo's strategic clients to develop custom production data science solutions that address and improve business challenges. Domo Data Scientists also work closely with Domo's Product Team to inform and develop data science products that accelerate Domo use and adoption. This role requires data scientists to understand and demonstrate competence in four knowledge domains: data engineering, model building, customer and initiative management, and problem solving. These four domains apply to all aspects of building production data science, machine learning, and AI pipelines in Domo-including use case discovery, ROI estimation and tracking, data ingestion, data preparation and cleaning, feature engineering, modeling, training, productionizing, and building out technical and end-user dashboards.

Time is balanced between calls and on-site interactions with Domo clients, with independent time allocated to informing and building data science products and solutions. Furthermore, Sr. Data Scientists on this team are teachers and trainers, with a firm emphasis on evangelizing data science best practices and enabling customers to understand and own their Domo data science solutions.

Sr. Data Scientists at Domo are encouraged to pursue projects that enhance clients' user experience and move forward the vision of data science at Domo. This can include contributing to the building of Domo data science products, designing and architecting apps, writing knowledge base articles, developing sales and marketing solutions, or contributing to Domo-sponsored published works.

At the senior level, data scientists are expected to demonstrate expert knowledge and industry respect and longevity in at least two of the four knowledge domains (data engineering, model building, customer and initiative management, and problem solving). Thought leadership and expertise for Senior-level data scientists can be evidenced through a cohesive body of work as is demonstrated in a portfolio of production DSML projects, publications, presentations, reports, patents, and other industry-relevant accomplishments.
