Job description


Fabrication Shop - **Position is in Southern California**

We are seeking an experienced AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to join our fabrication shop team. This is a hands-on QA/QC position inspecting fabricated piping systems, orbital GTAW (TIG) welds, and process piping to ensure compliance with ASME, AWS, and customer quality standards. Experience with orbital weld inspection in a fabrication environment is highly preferred. Local candidates only.

Responsibilities

  • Perform visual inspections of weld fit-up, fabrication, and finished assemblies within the fabrication shop.
  • Inspect orbital GTAW (TIG) welds on stainless steel tubing, process piping, and high-purity piping systems.
  • Verify compliance with applicable codes and standards including AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, ASME B31.3, customer specifications, and project quality requirements.
  • Review Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ).
  • Perform dimensional inspections using precision measuring equipment.
  • Conduct in-process inspections throughout fabrication and perform final inspections before products are released from the shop.
  • Coordinate and witness Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), including PT, RT, UT, and VT, when required.
  • Review material traceability, heat numbers, and Material Test Reports (MTRs).
  • Maintain weld maps, travelers, inspection reports, and quality documentation.
  • Identify non-conformances and work closely with shop supervisors and fabrication personnel to resolve quality issues.
  • Participate in customer audits and third-party inspections conducted within the fabrication facility.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies and quality management systems.

Qualifications

  • Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification required.
  • 3+ years of QA/QC inspection experience in a fabrication shop or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience inspecting orbital TIG (GTAW) welds preferred.
  • Knowledge of stainless steel process piping, high-purity piping, or sanitary tubing fabrication.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, isometrics, P&IDs, weld symbols, and mechanical drawings.
  • Working knowledge of ASME B31.3, ASME Section IX, AWS welding standards, and customer specifications.
  • Experience reviewing WPSs, PQRs, WPQs, and quality documentation.
  • Strong understanding of dimensional inspection and fabrication quality control processes.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and electronic quality documentation systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting fabrication for semiconductor, pharmaceutical, food & beverage, biotechnology, or other high-purity process piping industries.
  • Experience with orbital welding systems such as Arc Machines (AMI), Orbitalum, Polysoude, or similar equipment.
  • Knowledge of borescope inspections and weld documentation.
  • NDT certifications (VT, PT, MT, or UT) are a plus.
  • Experience working within an ISO 9001 quality management system.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk throughout a fabrication shop for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work safely around fabrication equipment, welding operations, and overhead cranes.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE at all times in the shop.
