Job Summary:

As the Traveling Fiber Splicer, you will ultimately be responsible for installing, splicing, testing, and maintaining fiber optic communication systems for aerial and underground telecommunications networks. You will support construction teams by delivering high-quality fiber optic installations and ensuring projects are completed safely, accurately, and efficiently. As the Traveling Fiber Splicer, your customers are telecommunications providers, internal construction teams, project managers, and clients, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through technical expertise, quality workmanship, and safe project execution.

Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):

  • Read and interpret work orders, engineering drawings, specifications, and cut sheets to determine work sequence
  • Perform fiber optic splicing, repairs, testing, and certification for aerial and underground communication systems
  • Install passive and active devices, enclosures, and terminal panels
  • Test fiber optic systems for continuity and signal quality using light meters and OTDR equipment
  • Pull fiber optic cable through existing duct systems and conduit using manual, mechanical, or blowing methods
  • Splice and activate underground and aerial fiber optic cable systems
  • Optimize network nodes and complete node splits to improve system capacity
  • Safely operate bucket trucks or climb utility poles to install and maintain fiber optic cable systems
  • Complete production documentation, verify system performance following activation, and troubleshoot as necessary
  • Ensure all work is performed safely and in compliance with company policies and governmental regulations
  • Travel for extended periods on multi-week rotations to support projects across various locations
  • Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs

Required Qualifications:

Education, Licensing, and Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of fiber optic splicing experience
  • Experience with aerial and underground fiber optic construction
  • Experience using OTDR, light meters, and fiber testing equipment

Skills and Abilities

  • Experience operating bucket trucks and aerial work platforms
  • Experience with cable television or broadband communication systems
  • Experience supporting telecommunications construction projects requiring extensive travel

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 80 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb utility poles, and work at heights for extended periods
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to safely operate bucket trucks and aerial work platforms
  • Ability to travel extensively for multiple weeks at a time
