Job description

Position Overview
The Peter Blum Family YMCA is seeking passionate, reliable, and knowledgeable Travel Basketball Coaches to lead and develop youth athletes in a competitive yet values-driven environment. This role focuses on player development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and representing the YMCA positively at practices, games, and tournaments.
Travel Basketball Coaches play a key role in helping athletes grow both on and off the court while upholding the YMCA's mission of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and lead organized, age-appropriate practices focused on skill development, teamwork, and game strategy
  • Coach teams during league games and weekend tournaments, including travel as required
  • Teach offensive and defensive concepts, and basketball IQ
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and disciplined team culture
  • Communicate effectively with players, parents, and YMCA staff
  • Ensure player safety and enforce YMCA policies and codes of conduct
  • Assist with player evaluations, team selection, and program events as needed
  • Represent the Peter Blum Family YMCA in a professional and respectful manner at all times

  • Previous basketball coaching experience (travel, AAU, school, or club level preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, and game strategy
  • Ability to work with youth athletes of varying skill levels
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Positive role model who emphasizes sportsmanship and character development
  • Availability for evening practices and weekend games/tournaments
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Ability to pass YMCA background screening requirements

Preferred Qualifications
  • Playing or coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level
  • Experience working in a YMCA or youth development setting
  • USA Basketball, AAU, or similar coaching certification
