Travel PCTs often work through staffing agencies and are sent to locations experiencing staff shortages, which allows them to gain experience in diverse healthcare settings while earning competitive compensation and travel benefits.

What does a travel PCT do?

As a travel PCT, your responsibilities are to go to medical facilities or patients’ homes to perform patient care technician duties, which include a mix of nursing and nursing aid tasks. You may be responsible for changing bed linens and ensuring that the patient rooms are clean, checking vital signs, helping patients with grooming and eating, and providing them with mobility services when they need to go to different departments to participate in tests or attend physical rehabilitation sessions. You also counsel patients and their families about treatment options and quality of life issues.

To thrive as a Travel Patient Care Technician, you need a solid understanding of basic patient care procedures, a high school diploma or GED, and completion of a certified nursing assistant (CNA) or PCT training program. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems, vital sign monitoring equipment, and basic medical instruments is typically required. These competencies are essential for delivering safe, consistent care while adjusting to different clinical environments and patient populations.

What are some common challenges travel PCTs face when adapting to new healthcare facilities?

Travel PCTs often encounter challenges such as quickly learning different facility protocols, adapting to varying electronic medical record systems, and building rapport with new teams and patients in a short time frame. Flexibility and strong communication skills are crucial for success, as each assignment may have unique routines and expectations.
