As a Travel Lineman, your workweek usually consists of full-time hours with the expectation of overtime, especially during emergency repairs or storm restoration projects. You may spend several days or weeks at a single location before moving to another job site, sometimes across different regions or states, depending on project needs. Relocation frequency varies by employer and current work demand, but being flexible and ready to travel on short notice is essential. While on assignment, you’ll typically work as part of a crew, collaborating closely with other linemen, foremen, and utility supervisors to restore or maintain electrical infrastructure.
A Travel Lineman is a skilled electrical worker who installs, repairs, and maintains power lines while frequently traveling to different locations. They work on high-voltage transmission and distribution systems, often in response to storm damage, new construction projects, or infrastructure upgrades. Travel Linemen must be comfortable working in various weather conditions and at great heights. This job typically requires specialized training, certifications, and the ability to relocate frequently based on job assignments.
To thrive as a Travel Lineman, you need strong electrical and mechanical aptitude, physical stamina, and experience installing, repairing, and maintaining power lines, usually supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of an apprenticeship. Certification in OSHA safety standards, a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), and proficiency with climbing gear and linework tools are typically required. Adaptability, excellent teamwork, and strong problem-solving skills help linemen excel, especially when frequently working in unfamiliar locations. These skills are critical to perform challenging, often hazardous duties safely and efficiently while collaborating effectively with utility crews in diverse environments.

In the event of an available position, the successful candidate must hold a journeyman lineman's card or equivalent through a recognized apprentice lineman program and be willing to live within 30 minutes travel time under normal conditions of their regularly assigned headquarters or live within the district's service territory. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Journeyman lineman status recognized by the District and the IBEW. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of electricity required in overhead and underground line construction and maintenance.
Working knowledge of Washington State Electrical Workers Safety Rules and Regulations. Valid Washington State Class "A" commercial driver's license and a safe driving record. Valid First Aid/ CPR card.
