Civil Engineer - Transportation
Springfield, IL

BFW Engineering is seeking a seasoned Professional Engineer to lead our Phase III Construction Engineering practice in Springfield. This is a high-visibility leadership role where you'll drive delivery of roadway, bridge, and infrastructure projects while mentoring a talented team and strengthening key client relationships across Illinois.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities
  • Lead & Develop the Team - Mentor resident engineers, inspectors, and technicians while building a high-performing Phase III group.
  • Oversee Project Delivery & Operations - Direct construction inspection, contract administration, and day-to-day field activities while managing schedules, budgets, staffing, and quality across multiple projects.
  • Ensure Technical Excellence & Compliance - Uphold IDOT standards (Construction Manual, BLRS Manual, Standard Specifications) and serve as the firm's technical authority on Phase III practices, documentation, and systems (ICORS/SiMA).
  • Manage Documentation & Field Coordination - Review pay estimates, change orders, and project records while resolving field issues and coordinating with contractors and resident engineers.
  • Build Relationships & Support Growth - Serve as a trusted partner to IDOT, local agencies, and contractors while contributing to business development and industry engagement.

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (ABET-accredited) or related field
  • Illinois Professional Engineer (PE)
  • 10+ years of transportation construction engineering experience, including IDOT Phase III work. Experience as a Resident Engineer preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of:
  • IDOT Construction Manual & Standard Specifications
  • Documentation of Contract Quantities
  • Materials and inspection requirements
  • CMMS
  • Proven leadership in managing construction engineering teams
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with agencies and contractors
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites across Illinois
