Job description

McFarland-Johnson, Inc. is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Transportation Design Engineer at its Hollywood, Florida location.

The position of Transportation Design Engineer is responsible for the design, planning, operation, construction, and maintenance of roads and highways to ensure the efficient and safe transportation of goods and people.

Specifically, the position of Transportation Design Engineer will require the qualified candidate to:

(i) use advanced techniques and modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices to develop highway and roadway design plans, including grading and drainage design, pavement design, utilities, stormwater design, quantities, as well as specs and contract documents for a diverse array of projects across multiple State Departments of Transportation (DOT) and municipalities along the East Coast and within the State of Florida;

(ii) prepare CAD drawings for new highway/roadway designs and rehabilitations of various existing structures using software design packages (e.g., Microstation, AutoCAD, OpenRoads Designer, etc.);

(iii) perform complex assignments requiring development of new and/or improved techniques and procedures;

(iv) assist in the education and development of design staff and act as resource for design questions;

(v) participate in the interpretation, update, and/or creation of Standards of Practice;

(vi) perform QA/QC on drawings from drafters, designers, and/or design engineers on assigned projects;

(vii) perform engineering oversight duties as assigned based on the project;

(viii) serve as the McFarland-Johnson contact for the client, other design professionals, and contractors for assigned projects;

(ix) serve as quality coordinator for engineering led projects; and

(x) serve on professional association committees for establishment of engineering policies, standards, procedures, and research at a local, state, or national level with respect to highway / roadway matters.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. In addition, qualified candidates must possess 24 months of experience as a Transportation Engineer, Civil Engineer or related engineer position focused on highway/roadway engineering and design.

Qualified candidates must also possess 24 months of experience with the following skills:

(i) highway/roadway engineering and design – e.g., grading and drainage design, pavement design, utilities, stormwater design, quantities, specifications, contract documents; and

(ii) use of design software programs such as Microstation, AutoCAD and/or OpenRoads Designer to develop construction plans, 3D models, engineering reports and specification development.

Finally, domestic travel to project sites up to 10% may be required.
