What is a transmission technician?

Transmission technicians are specialized automotive professionals who diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicle transmission systems. These systems are responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels, allowing the car to move at different speeds. Transmission technicians work with both manual and automatic transmissions, addressing issues like gear slipping, fluid leaks, and shifting problems. Their expertise is essential to ensure vehicles operate smoothly and efficiently.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in transmission engineering, and how can they be managed?

Transmission engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining system reliability during peak demand, integrating renewable energy sources, and responding to unexpected outages. Managing these issues requires strong problem-solving skills, effective communication with operations and maintenance teams, and staying updated on evolving industry standards. Proactive maintenance planning and real-time monitoring systems also help minimize downtime and ensure consistent power delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a transmission engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Transmission Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems, and grid operations, typically validated by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software like PSS®E, ETAP, and SCADA systems, as well as certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE), are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help Transmission Engineers collaborate and troubleshoot efficiently. These skills are crucial for ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of power transmission networks.

Job description

Job Title: Transmission Engineer

Join LineWorks Engineering — a mid-sized power delivery firm with offices in Tampa, Atlanta, and Birmingham. We design the systems that power our communities, from transmission and substations to distribution and lighting. As a growing mid-size firm, we offer the best of both worlds — the stability and resources of larger organizations, paired with the flexibility, autonomy, and visibility you only find in a close-knit environment.

We are seeking a experienced Transmission Engineer to support our growing Transmission structural team. This role will work closely with Lineworks Engineering’s transmission team and our utility clients on the design and installation of overhead electric transmission lines. The Transmission Engineer will utilize industry-standard, in-house, and client-based software applications to develop detailed engineering and construction design packages.

In addition to technical expertise, this position will provide leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and designers, contribute to project planning and quality assurance, and serve as a primary point of contact for client coordination and communication. A minimum of 3 years of direct experience in the design of high-voltage overhead transmission lines is required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program
  • Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) preferred, but not required
  • Minimum 3 years of transmission line design experience in the electric utility industry
  • Proficient in design of transmission foundations
  • Extensive experience with design codes and industry standards, including: NESC, ASCE, IEEE, and ACI
  • Proficient in the following industry software: PLS-CADD, PLS Pole, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to apply engineering principles to solve complex technical problems
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Willing to travel for on-site work responsibilities involving occasional overnight travel to locations for meetings with clients, vendors, and equipment suppliers
  • Pre-employment drug screening, background check and valid drivers license

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design overhead transmission lines utilizing PLS-CADD
  • Support the development and review of transmission design drawings, specifications, and construction documents
  • Sustain strong relationships with LineWorks' clients and contractors, ensuring clear communication to achieve client satisfaction, adhere to deadlines, and stay within budget.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry standards, regulations, and best practices for transmission line design
  • Collaborate with other engineers, clients, and contractors to ensure project goals are met
  • Assist in the preparation of progress reports, compliance documentation, and record-keeping of transmission technical documents and drawings
  • Mentor Junior engineers and provide technical guidance

Benefits:

  • Competitive sign-on bonus
  • Relocation assistance available
  • Flexible schedule (flex Fridays)
  • Employee Annual Incentive Plan availability
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Paid holidays
  • 401(k) employer matching (no waiting period)
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance coverage (no waiting period)
  • Disability insurance and group term life insurance
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional licensure reimbursement
  • Referral program
  • Gym membership (Tampa office)

Take the next step in your Transmission design and leadership career with a team that values your expertise and invests in your growth and apply to join LineWorks Engineering!
