What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Translation Localization Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Translation Localization Specialist, you need fluency in multiple languages, in-depth cultural knowledge, and a background in linguistics or translation studies. Proficiency with computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, localization management systems, and familiarity with relevant file formats and content management systems are typically required. Attention to detail, cultural sensitivity, and strong communication skills set outstanding specialists apart in adapting content for global audiences. These competencies ensure accurate, culturally appropriate translations that resonate with target markets and maintain brand consistency.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals working in translation localization projects?

Professionals in translation localization often encounter challenges such as maintaining linguistic accuracy while adapting content for cultural relevance, managing tight deadlines across multiple projects, and collaborating with cross-functional teams like developers, designers, and product managers. Additionally, staying updated with the latest localization tools and technology is crucial, as is ensuring consistency and quality across all localized materials. Effective communication and project management skills are essential to navigate these complexities and deliver high-quality localized content.

What is translation localization?

Translation localization is the process of adapting content not just by translating the language, but also by modifying it to suit the cultural, legal, and regional preferences of a specific target audience. This includes adjusting idioms, graphics, date formats, currencies, and other elements to ensure the content feels natural and relevant to local users. Localization ensures that products, websites, software, and documents are fully accessible and relatable to people in different regions, which is especially important for global businesses. The goal is to provide a seamless user experience that goes beyond word-for-word translation.

What is the difference between Translation Localization vs Translation Localization?

AspectTranslation Localization
Primary FocusConverting content from one language to another while adapting cultural nuances
Skills RequiredLanguage proficiency, cultural knowledge, translation techniques
Work EnvironmentTranslation agencies, multinational companies, freelance
CertificationsLanguage certifications, translation credentials

Translation Localization involves not only translating text but also adapting content to fit cultural contexts, making it suitable for global markets. It shares skills and certifications with general translation but emphasizes cultural adaptation. Both roles are essential in international communication, but localization requires a deeper understanding of cultural nuances beyond language translation.

Job description

Summary

The Opportunity
Guidewire is seeking a self-motivated, global-centric Translation Project Manager to support the localization of content across multiple languages. This role sits within the Web Strategy Team and focuses on building and running a translation process that emphasizes quality, consistency, and scalability.
You will manage translation projects end to end, coordinate internal and external stakeholders, and help evolve how we approach translation for the web and priority content as our content and global reach grows. This is a hands-on, execution-focused role for someone comfortable creating and maintaining an evolving translation process, operating without a formal translation management system, designing practical workflows, and using AI thoughtfully as an accelerator while maintaining high-quality standards.

Job Description

What You Will Do
  • Manage and implement the localization of website content within a content management system across multiple languages, operating established translation workflows from intake through delivery and publication

  • Design, document, and evolve repeatable translation workflows for web content and other priority assets that focus on quality, clarity, and consistency

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for web and other content translation projects, ensuring content stakeholders understand timelines, requirements, and quality expectations

  • Track project timelines, dependencies, and risks, and proactively communicate status, blockers, and decisions needed to keep work moving

  • Ensure translated content moves through defined review and approval processes and meets agreed-upon quality standards prior to publication

  • Collaborate as part of the Web Strategy Team to ensure translated content aligns with design, UX, and publishing requirements

  • Collaborate as part of the Marketing Team to ensure translated content aligns with company goals and priorities, as well as Guidewire brand standards

  • Use AI-assisted translation tools as accelerators where appropriate, and participate in evolving AI-assisted translation approaches over time

  • Identify gaps, inefficiencies, or risks in the translation process and propose practical, solutions-driven improvements

  • Manage translation projects as identified by Marketing leadership

What We're Looking For

  • Three to five years of experience managing multi-lingual translation or localization projects, with a focus on web or digital content

  • Hands-on experience coordinating translation workflows involving content owners and reviewers

  • Strong understanding of website content structures, CMS-driven publishing workflows, and ongoing content updates

  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to reason about meaning, intent, and clarity in source content to support accurate translation

  • Demonstrated judgment in managing translation quality through defined review processes, feedback loops, and stakeholder validation

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines

  • Strong communication skills for working with cross-functional teams and content stakeholders

  • Self-starter mindset with a solutions-driven approach to ambiguous or evolving processes

  • Openness to using AI tools to improve efficiency, paired with sound judgment around quality controls and risk management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in translation, localization, linguistics, communications, technical communication, or a related field

  • Fluency in two or more languages, with experience applying that knowledge in a professional or web-based context

  • B2B technology company and/or insurance industry experience

  • Experience localizing CMS-driven websites, including managing updates, version changes, and ongoing content refreshes

  • Familiarity with translation review practices, terminology management, dictionary management, and style guidance for web or marketing content

Experience using AI-assisted translation as part of a production workflow, with an understanding of when human review is required

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $117,000 - $175,000 . Your base pay will depend on your experience, skills, education, training, and location among other factors. All full-time positions or part-time roles working 30 hours or more a week at Guidewire are eligible for benefits that support their health and well-being including health, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, and a company sponsored retirement plan. In addition, some roles may be eligible for the annual company bonus plan, commissions, and/or long term incentive awards which are contingent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, company and employee performance.
