What is a transition project manager?

Transition Project Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the smooth transfer of projects, services, or operations from one state to another, such as during mergers, system upgrades, or organizational changes. They plan, coordinate, and execute transition activities to minimize disruption and ensure that objectives are met within budget and timeline constraints. Their role often involves risk assessment, stakeholder communication, and process optimization to ensure a seamless transition and continued business performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a transition project manager?

To thrive as a Transition Project Manager, you need strong project management expertise, experience in change management, and often a relevant degree or certification like PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools (such as MS Project, Jira, or Asana) and IT service management systems (like ITIL) is typically required. • Continuously assess issues, risks, and opportunities and assist with resolution.
  • Track scope changes and manage change control processes to prevent scope creep.
  • Manage program-level change requests, risks, assumptions, issues, and decisions (CRAID) logs.
  • Support the gathering and review of metrics for major releases and production releases.
  • Support quarterly Program Increment (PI) planning and facilitate related logistics, breakout sessions, presentations, and workshops.

  • Coordinate release activities including cutover, testing cycles, training programs, and data readiness.
  • Support resolution of dependencies with product managers and relevant teams.
  • Remove blockers and impediments by ensuring issues are brought to appropriate governance forums.
  • Facilitate lessons learned and transition projects to steady-state support and operations.
  • Lead end-to-end management of SAP projects, including implementations, upgrades, rollouts, support enhancements, S/4HANA migrations, module deployments, and integration initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive project plans, timelines, resource allocations, budgets, and risk registers.
  • Own and administer JIRA boards for project activities, including board configuration, workflows, dashboards, custom fields, backlogs, epics, user stories, tasks, and subtasks.
  • Manage project governance activities, including status reporting, steering committee updates, RAID logs, and change management processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement of project management practices, JIRA usage standards, and reporting templates.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience managing SAP projects in a project management capacity, including implementation, upgrade, or support projects.
  • 6 years of IT experience.
  • 3 years of program management experience.
  • Expert-level, daily hands-on experience with JIRA, including board configuration, workflow automation, JQL queries, dashboard creation, and integration with Confluence.
  • Strong knowledge of Agile/Scrum and Waterfall/hybrid project delivery frameworks.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PMP, PMI-ACP, CSM (Certified Scrum Master), or SAFe certification.
  • SAP Activate or SAP certification in a relevant module.
  • Experience with Power BI, Power Automate, JIRA Align, JIRA Service Management, or other Atlassian tools such as Confluence.
  • Experience with ITSM/change management tools such as ServiceNow.
  • Experience in the automotive or manufacturing industry.
Key Attributes
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on clean, well-organized JIRA boards and traceable project artifacts.
