The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony represents descendants of three Great Basin Indigenous peoples: the **Numu (Northern Paiute)**, **Newe (Western Shoshone)**, and **Washeshu (Washoe)**. Make a difference as a Transit Driver

As a Full-Time Transit Driver with the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, you'll be responsible for safely operating buses along designated routes while adhering to established schedules. Your role goes beyond driving; it involves ensuring a courteous experience for passengers and maintaining order within the vehicle. You'll conduct essential pre-trip vehicle inspections, checking fluid levels and ensuring the bus is in top condition for service. This position allows you to work independently while following regulations and time schedules, making it ideal for those who thrive in a structured yet dynamic environment. Are you the Transit Driver we're looking for?

To excel as a Full-Time Transit Driver with the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, strong operational skills and an unwavering commitment to safety and customer service are essential. Candidates should have at least two years of experience operating motorized vehicles in various weather conditions, ensuring a safe driving record. Proficiency in using safety equipment, such as wheelchair lifts and restraints, is necessary to promote passenger comfort.

A welcoming demeanor is crucial, as you'll engage with passengers daily, providing information about routes and schedules while collecting fares. Attention to detail is essential for conducting thorough inspections of the vehicle, noting any defects, and maintaining accurate records. The ability to remain calm under pressure, particularly in challenging traffic or weather conditions, is vital.

Additionally, candidates should demonstrate flexibility with varying hours and the capacity to contribute to cleaning and maintenance tasks, enhancing the overall transit experience for all passengers.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • โ€ข Operates a passenger bus on a designated route and schedule, safely picks up and discharges passengers collects fares, verifies passes (ID for validity) counts riders; operates wheelchair lifts and restraints for passenger safety and comfort; regulates heating, cooling, lighting and ventilating systems for passenger comfort; receives passenger surveys.
  • Checks fluids and tires on vehicle before starting; conducts inspections before during and after operation to note damage or defects including body damage, tires, radiator, lights, instruments, brakes, radio and other equipment; makes notes on defect sheet.
  • Promotes positive passenger relations by greeting passengers in a pleasant and courteous manner; collects fares and issues transfers; gives information concerning routes, fares, schedules and transfer points; secures and turns in articles found in vehicle; completes trip and other reports; distributes and receives passenger surveys.
  • Receives input from passengers in a polite manner and attempts to provide appropriate information; refers information to supervisor; makes suggestions to supervisor on safety and route improvements; reports observed accidents, hazards and other circumstances requiring attention to supervisor.
  • May participate in the cleaning of buses, facilities and assists in the office when available or has free time, uses power washer to clean buses, sweeps vehicle, empties waste baskets, answer telephone, provides information to public on route and service.
  • Operates two-way radio in a professional manner, performs hourly vehicle walk-through and walk-a-rounds while on route and reports changing conditions to supervisor.
  • Will be required to attend training, retraining or other informational meetings as necessary.
  • Attends work on a regular and dependable basis.
  • Interacts in a professional and respectful manner with Colony staff and the public.
  • Performs various winter maintenance activities as needed: e.g., snowplow, clearing of walks and driveways etc.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment as required. May be required to obtain and maintain a CDL license.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years' experience with the safe operation of passenger cars, trucks or other motorized vehicles in a variety of weather conditions and a willingness to serve the public; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Ability to obtain a commercial driver's license. Possession of a safe driving record.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age for insurance purposes
  • Proven ability to demonstrate self-motivation, service to the public and a willingness to do a good job.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle safely while observing passenger activities in the bus and at the bus stop; operate a large passenger bus independently on assigned route within established time schedules on crowded streets in all weather conditions;
  • Adept in dealing with public in a pleasant and courteous manner and to remain calm in adverse weather conditions, crowded traffic conditions and when dealing with irate or disorderly passengers;
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions;
  • Possession of or ability to secure and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
  • Ability to accurately maintain records of fare categories, transfers coordinated, equipment defects and time schedules;
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to a diverse group of individuals including the elderly and disabled.
  • Ability to work varying hours including early morning, late evening and on weekends.
  • Must be able to pass background check and drug test.
