Job description

Midwest Transit Equipment seeks qualified Full Time Diesel Mechanic for our Gary, IN location. This position will work out of our South Holland location while we move to our new Gary location in the spring of 2026
This is a 2nd Shift position working Monday - Friday, 2pm - 10:30pm
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Servicing of gasoline and diesel powered buses from basic maintenance and minor repairs to full vehicle service. This is a safety-sensitive position. Employees holding this position are responsible for the safe performance of the job duties.
  • Diagnose mechanical defects and carries out a preventive maintenance program
  • Major overhaul of engines and transmissions
  • Service and maintain brakes, air compressors, fuel systems, ignitions, HVAC systems and Wheelchair lifts
  • Service and maintain vehicle air conditioning units
  • Inspects and repairs school buses per DOT requirements
  • Keep records of time and materials used
  • Utilize and working knowledge of all Manufacturing Partners Diagnostic Software and Portals; ex Navistar
  • Working knowledge of all products serviced by Company including but not limited to Navistar IC Bus and supplier products

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
  • 4+ years Medium duty bus experience, International Truck/Bus preferred
  • 100% certification for all Manufacturer training requirements including but not limited to Cummins, Navistar, and Braun
  • Must have own set of tools
  • Knowledge of the provisions of codes and laws relating to pupil transportation (i.e. DOT inspections)
  • CDL class B License with air brake endorsement
  • A/C Certification
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion in a timely manner
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
