Transit Consultant information

What is a transit consultant?

Transit consultants are professionals who provide expert advice and solutions to public transportation agencies, governments, or private firms regarding the planning, design, management, and improvement of transit systems. They may work on projects related to bus, rail, or other modes of public transportation, helping to optimize routes, schedules, and operations. Their work often involves data analysis, stakeholder engagement, project management, and policy recommendations to enhance transit efficiency and rider experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a transit consultant?

To thrive as a Transit Consultant, you need expertise in transportation planning, data analysis, and a relevant degree such as urban planning, civil engineering, or transportation management. Familiarity with GIS software, transit modeling tools, and regulatory frameworks is essential, along with certifications like AICP or PMP being advantageous. Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement skills help build consensus and deliver effective transit solutions. These competencies are crucial for designing efficient, sustainable transit systems that meet client and community needs.

How does a transit consultant typically collaborate with public agencies and stakeholders during a project?

Transit Consultants often work closely with public agencies, community organizations, and other stakeholders to develop and implement transportation solutions. This collaboration usually involves facilitating meetings, gathering input on transit needs, and presenting recommendations. Consultants must be skilled communicators to navigate differing priorities and ensure that all voices are heard, while also keeping projects on track. Building strong relationships and maintaining transparency are key to achieving successful outcomes.

  • Create and maintain documentation: runbooks, standards, deployment procedures, and operational playbooks.
  • Collaborate with application teams, platform/DevOps, and security to deliver end-to-end solutions.

Required Qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience with at least 3+ years of database development experience.
  • Strong experience with PostgreSQL (preferably Aurora PostgreSQL) including performance tuning and troubleshooting.
  • Strong experience with Oracle Database, including PL/SQL development and optimization.
  • Advanced SQL skills: complex joins, window functions, execution plan analysis, indexing strategies.
  • Experience with AWS fundamentals and hands-on usage of services like EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch.
  • Hands-on Terraform experience (modules, remote state, environments, CI/CD integration is a plus).
  • Understanding of database reliability patterns: replication, HA, read scaling, failover concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with database migration (Oracle to PostgreSQL/Aurora) and tools like AWS DMS/SCT (if relevant).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD for database changes (Liquibase/Flyway or similar).
  • Knowledge of monitoring/observability: CloudWatch metrics/logs, performance insights, alerting.
  • Experience with containerized workloads (ECS/EKS) interacting with databases.
