Job description

Established in 1919 and traded on the NYSE, Standard Motor Products, Inc. (SMP) is a leading independent manufacturer and distributor of premium automotive replacement parts utilized in the maintenance, repair, and service of vehicles in the automotive aftermarket. Additionally, SMP provides customized solutions for vehicle control and thermal management products in diversified end markets represented by its Engineered Solutions segment.
Globally, SMP employs over 6,000 employees across nearly 40 manufacturing, distribution, and engineering facilities and offices located in North America, Europe and Asia. SMP sells its products primarily to automotive aftermarket retailers, program distribution groups, warehouse distributors, original equipment manufacturers, and original equipment service part operations in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Mexico, and other Latin American countries.
Primary Responsibilities:
Create, Develop, Document, Implement, and Improve processes and procedures used to
manufacture, assemble, process, and/or test the Company's products in a manner to ensure company business objectives are meet. Leads and participates in projects to improve delivery, quality, and/or cost, which requires coordinating activities with other functions. Projects may include methods, processes, machine designs, tooling and equipment, new manufacturing technology, and performance monitoring systems.
Duties:
  • Actively promoting and applying our Lean Manufacturing philosophies, concepts, and methodologies within the production implementation and manufacturing improvement process.
  • Cost reducing existing manufacturing, methods, processes and materials.
  • Designing, developing, and implementing manufacturing processes for new/changed
    products; taking concepts and information from Design Engineers, and transforming
    this information into a manufacturing process that capably produces product that meets the design intent, is cost effective, effective and efficient.
  • Actively participate in new product/process development projects, taking over the
    leadership of the projects, as they are released for implementation. Required knowledge and experience includes:
    a. Hydraulics
    b. Pneumatics
    c. Electronic interfaces and systems, such as LabVIEW
    d. PLC Programming
    e. Automation
  • Developing, documenting, distributing, and helping train employees on new processing equipment, tooling, materials, and methods for assembly, sub-assembly, and machining processes.
  • Developing, documenting, and maintaining manufacturing process capabilities and
    capacities.
  • Work with Tooling and Maintenance Departments on maintenance requirements to
    develop preventive maintenance schedules, and qualify tools using statistics
  • Specifying, justifying, requisitioning, and implementing new capital equipment,
    including ROI estimates
  • Developing and maintaining production routings, process sheets, and work instructions.
  • Create and update information in the ERP systems such as rates, routings, instructions, adding tools and fixtures to BOM's
  • Defining, refining and improving existing manufacturing processes.
    o Use Lean Methodologies and 6-S Principles
    o Use of Six Sigma Tools
    o Investigating automation concepts, options, costs, and ROI
  • Refining and improving existing production layouts and materials flow.
  • Defining, designing, implementing, and supporting tooling and fixtures.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities include the following; other duties may be assigned;
  • Provide technical assistance to the production floor
  • Participate in new product design and development meetings
  • Verify and release new tooling and fixtures
  • Train new manufacturing engineers to create and maintain product masters, structures, routings, and process sheets
  • Train production personnel on new manufacturing processes
  • Lead and/or participate in Internal Audits and Corrective Actions
  • Lead and/or participate in APQP Meetings
  • Create and update PFMEA and Process Flow Charts

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree (B. S.) or equivalent from four-year college or university; and two to four
years related experience and/or training. Experience using MS word, MS excel, MS access,
Outlook, Minitab, ERP software. LabVIEW experience is a plus. Must be able to read part and assembly drawings/prints. Experience with the following also preferred; CNC programming, Solidworks, AutoCAD, SPC and GD&T
