What are Transfer Assistants?

Transfer Assistants are professionals who help students transition from one educational institution to another, typically from a community college to a university. They provide guidance on transfer requirements, assist with application processes, and help students select appropriate courses to ensure a smooth credit transfer. Transfer Assistants also offer support with academic planning and may answer questions about scholarships, deadlines, and campus resources. Their goal is to make the transfer experience as seamless and successful as possible for students.

How does a Transfer Assistant typically support students during the college transfer process?

A Transfer Assistant plays a crucial role in guiding students through every step of the college transfer process, from initial research to application completion. This includes advising on course selection, ensuring that credits will transfer, and helping students meet important deadlines. Transfer Assistants often collaborate closely with academic advisors, admissions staff, and registrars to resolve any issues and provide clear, accurate information. Their support helps students navigate common challenges, such as understanding transfer policies and managing paperwork, making the process smoother and less stressful.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Transfer Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Transfer Assistant, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a background in administrative support or customer service, often with a high school diploma or associate degree. Familiarity with student information systems, data entry software, and office productivity tools like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and a helpful, patient demeanor help you excel when assisting students and coordinating between departments. These skills ensure accurate processing of transfer applications, effective support for students, and smooth operation of institutional processes.

Job description

Description
About the Bard High School Early Colleges
The Bard High School Early Colleges are founded on the belief that many high school-age students are eager and ready for the intellectual challenges of a college education. The Bard Early Colleges act on this belief by providing younger scholars with a tuition-free, credit-bearing college course of study in the liberal arts and sciences following the 9th and 10th grades. Students are taught by college faculty in seminar classes; they receive up to 60 college credits and an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College, concurrently with a high school diploma. The Bard High School Early Colleges begin preparing students for college work as early as the 9th grade and offer ongoing guidance and academic support.
Now in its second decade, the Bard High School Early College network serves over 3,300 students in campuses in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan and Queens, New York; Newark, New Jersey; New Orleans, Louisiana; Cleveland, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland; and Washington, DC.
