Job description

Job Summary

The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day financial operations of the law firm through accurate transaction processing, account reconciliations, financial record maintenance, billing support, and expense management. This role performs a variety of bookkeeping and accounting functions while working closely with firm leadership and outside accounting professionals to ensure financial accuracy, organization, and compliance with legal accounting requirements.

This position is ideal for a motivated professional who takes pride in organization, accuracy, and ownership of their work. We are looking for someone who wants to grow within the accounting field, contribute to improving processes, and become a trusted part of the firm’s financial operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Record and maintain daily financial transactions, including accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Manage accounts payable, including processing vendor invoices, expense reports, and payments
  • Process employee reimbursements and firm-related expenses
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, liability accounts, and client trust accounts on a monthly basis
  • Assist with client trust account (IOLTA) activity while maintaining compliance with legal and ethical accounting requirements
  • Support client billing by tracking reimbursable expenses, posting payments, and assisting with invoice review
  • Maintain accurate general ledger entries and supporting documentation
  • Follow established month-end and year-end close procedures
  • Prepare account reconciliations and financial summaries for management review
  • Coordinate with outside accountants and CPAs regarding payroll, taxes, audits, and financial reporting
  • Maintain organized financial records in accordance with firm policies and document retention standards
  • Assist with budgeting, cash flow tracking, and financial organization initiatives as assigned
  • Identify discrepancies, resolve issues proactively, and escalate concerns when appropriate
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial and client-related information at all times

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred (or equivalent work experience)
  • 2–5 years of accounting, bookkeeping, or finance support experience preferred
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online or similar accounting software preferred
  • Experience with legal or trust accounting is a plus, but not required
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles and account reconciliations
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and accuracy
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, and work independently
  • Strong integrity and ability to handle confidential information professionally
