Job description

Engineering & Design Team
Help Build the Networks That Connect Communities
Fibersmith helps telecom providers bring high-speed internet to homes, businesses, and communities across the country. Our work supports broadband expansion through engineering, mapping, field data, project documentation, and project execution.
We're looking for detail-oriented, motivated individuals to join our Engineering & Design team as Trainee Assistant Consultants. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys maps, data, technology, organization, and problem-solving - and wants to grow in the fiber engineering industry.
No fiber experience? That's okay. We're looking for someone who is dependable, accurate, willing to learn, and interested in building technical skills over time.
About the Role
As a Trainee Assistant Consultant, you'll help create and update GIS data, maps, reports, project records, and design-related documentation. You'll work with experienced team members while learning Fibersmith's tools, standards, and workflows.
This role is a strong starting point for someone who wants to grow toward an Engineering Consultant position.
What You'll Do
Responsibilities may include:
  • Entering and updating GIS features, attributes, and connections
  • Creating and updating digital maps using established standards
  • Assisting with preliminary design work as directed
  • Generating field and construction maps for project use
  • Preparing and updating reports, project records, and tracking documents
  • Maintaining organized files, drawings, designs, and supporting documentation
  • Helping identify missing information, inconsistent data, or documentation gaps
  • Supporting field data collection when needed
  • Traveling up to 10-15% for job sites, industry events, or project needs
  • Supporting permitting-related tasks when assigned

What We're Looking For
You may be a great fit if you are:
  • Detail-oriented and organized
  • Comfortable following standards, workflows, and instructions
  • Willing to ask questions and learn new processes
  • Comfortable using technology and learning new software
  • Able to manage multiple tasks with direction and support
  • A strong team player who is open to coaching and feedback
  • Interested in GIS, mapping, broadband, fiber networks, or engineering support work

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to follow established standards, templates, and workflows
  • Willingness to learn GIS, mapping, project documentation, and fiber engineering workflows
  • Ability to complete daily timecards with the correct job code and clear work descriptions
  • Ability to work professionally within a team environment
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record for roles requiring field data collection

Bonus Points
  • Interest or experience in GIS, mapping, CAD, telecom, permitting, or fiber networks
  • Experience with project documentation, file organization, or structured workflows

Why Fibersmith?
At Fibersmith, your work matters. The maps, records, updates, and documentation you help create support broadband networks that serve real communities.
If you're detail-oriented, organized, comfortable with technology, and ready to learn, we'd like to hear from you.
