Job description

Position: Software Engineer I

Employment Status: Exempt, Full Time

Location: Salt Lake City, Corporate Office

Company Profile

Carterra is a fast-growing life science biotechnology company headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. Our name comes from two ideas; cartography (mapping) and terra (worlds), “mapping worlds.” That captures our high-speed, high-resolution, label-free biosensor technology, which leading pharmaceutical and biotech companies use to explore territory in biotherapeutic drug discovery that was previously impossible to investigate.

Our platform helps researchers identify promising targets early in the drug discovery process, significantly reducing the risk and cost of bringing new therapies forward. The software you build here directly accelerates that science.

Job Summary

Carterra builds the software that runs our biosensor instruments and turns the data they produce into discoveries. Reporting to a software engineering manager, the Software Engineer I delivers assigned development tasks within a project, learns the Carterra technology stack and quality system, and builds the fundamentals the rest of the technical track is built on.

This is a hands-on role with close mentorship. You will be paired with more experienced engineers who review your work and help you grow, and you will be expected to take real ownership of the tasks you are given and to say clearly when you are stuck.

Essential Functions:

•     Complete assigned development tasks within a project under the supervision of the project team.

•     Take ownership of assigned tasks, report progress, and perform the appropriate level of validation that the work is complete before handing it off.

•     Write and execute unit tests for the code you deliver.

•     Learn the technologies, coding languages, and quality system requirements of the products you work on.

•     Consult more senior members of the department for guidance on the application of technologies.

•     Present demonstrations of your work to the team.

•     Continually update your technical knowledge and skills.

•     Support software testing, data analysis, and related administrative activities.

Required Skills and Abilities

•     Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

•     Working proficiency in at least one language relevant to Carterra's stack, such as C# and .NET.

•     Ability to write and execute unit tests for your own code.

•     Familiarity with version control and the discipline to work within an established development workflow.

•     A fundamental understanding of the software you are assigned to, and the ability to build on it quickly.

•     Receptiveness to code review, mentorship, and technical direction from more experienced engineers.

•     Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to describe what you built and why.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

•     Internship, co-op, or project experience shipping software used by someone other than the author.

•     Exposure to AI-assisted development tools.

•     Coursework or hands-on exposure to cloud services (Azure, AWS, or GCP).

•     Front-end exposure (TypeScript or a modern web framework) or desktop UI experience (WPF).

•     Interest in scientific, life-science, instrumentation, or other data-intensive software domains.

How we Work

Carterra is looking for people of action. These are the traits that define our team:

•     We act like owners. We treat the product as our own and take responsibility for outcomes.

•     We tackle hard problems. We lean into challenges and ambiguity, choosing to solve the problems others avoid.

•     We are self-motivated. We do not wait to be told; We see what needs to be done and do it.

  • •     We are collaborative. We communicate openly, challenge respectfully, and succeed together.
