Overview:
Participates in an extensive training program in order to gain the knowledge and abilities necessary to be a Capitol Police Investigator, attends formal classroom and in-depth basic field training in relation to the safety and protection of life and property in state offices under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Secretary of State; participates in on-the-job training on pertinent policies, procedures and rules of the Office of the Secretary of State, Department of Police.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Receives training to learn security duties in enforcing rules and policies relating to building and grounds security by implementing rules relating to vehicle speed, emergency procedures, parking and use of walks in assigned areas; attends formal classes to be trained on but not limited to the care and use of firearms, first aid, self-defense, report writing, etc.
  • Under the assignment of the Capitol Police Investigators, receives on-the-job training by observing and participating in investigative and enforcement activities, such as checking incoming/outgoing materials, inspecting delivery of supplies and materials, operating electronic security and surveillance equipment, monitor facilities to ensure proper precautions are taken for fire protection, operates and checks fire and burglar alarm systems and portable and stationary radio communicating equipment in order to gain familiarity with the day-to-day operations involved with the Department of Police.
  • Receives training in dealing and maintaining good public relations with law enforcement agencies, the general public, prosecutors and community groups by displaying a professional manner of assistance.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Education and Experience:
Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of sixty (60) semester hours of college, preferably with coursework in law enforcement, criminal justice, law, government or related field.
Educational requirement may be waived if applicant has:
  • certification as a Police Officer from the IL Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board or reciprocal qualification OR
  • two consecutive years' service in the armed forces and received an honorable discharge OR
  • at least three years of full-time employment as a corrections/detention officer, parole agent or professional security guard OR
  • some combination of the above criteria.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Requires physical condition sufficient to pass a comprehensive physical examination.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of communications techniques for organizing and preparing comprehensive written and oral reports.
  • Requires ability to learn human relations and interpersonal relations skills to deal with members of the public and representatives of outside agencies.
  • Requires freedom from felony and disqualifying misdemeanor criminal convictions.
  • Requires the ability to successfully complete the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Basic Training Program.
  • Requires possession of a valid Illinois driver's license.
  • Requires applicant be 21 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Requires the ability to lift, push/pull and/or carry up to and including 90 lbs.
