Job description

Job Title: Cardiac SonographerJob Description

The Cardiac Sonographer performs comprehensive cardiac ultrasound examinations for patients ranging from those with normal cardiac anatomy to those with complex congenital heart disease. This role conducts examinations independently across all phases of care, including diagnostic, pre-operative, intraoperative under anesthesia, and post-operative following complex surgical repairs. The position also supports the non-invasive cardiology laboratory through clinical expertise, equipment oversight, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities
  • Perform cardiac ultrasound examinations that encompass normal cardiac anatomy and complex congenital heart disease across diagnostic, pre-operative, intraoperative under anesthesia, and post-operative phases of care.
  • Supervise the provision of echocardiography examinations within the non-invasive laboratory, monitoring performance and providing assistance to ensure examinations follow established protocols.
  • Plan case methodology and conduct comprehensive echocardiography examinations in the laboratory or using portable equipment at other locations as needed.
  • Establish a supportive and professional relationship with patients and families, clearly explaining examination procedures and communicating any scheduling problems or changes.
  • Maintain and evaluate laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of standard supplies, initiating reorders in accordance with established par levels.
  • Prepare and maintain required logs and records related to echocardiography procedures, equipment, and supplies.
  • Provide instruction and guidance on echocardiography procedures and interpretation of results to sonographers, trainees, and fellows.
  • Assist in clinical research studies by explaining protocols to staff and overseeing the collection of required clinical data.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to support accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and continuity of patient care.
Essential Skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in cardiac sonography with the ability to perform comprehensive pediatric echocardiography examinations, including complex congenital heart disease.
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography (RDCS) certification (adult or pediatric) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
  • Pediatric Echocardiography (RDCS PE) certification.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification in accordance with American Heart Association standards.
  • Completion of an accredited Cardiac Ultrasound program in pediatric echocardiography.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in pediatric echocardiography; 5 years preferred.
  • Ability to supervise echocardiography services in a non-invasive laboratory and ensure adherence to established protocols.
  • Skill in planning and conducting comprehensive echocardiography examinations using both laboratory and portable equipment.
  • Strong communication skills to explain procedures, address questions, and provide clear information to patients, families, and healthcare staff.
  • Ability to maintain accurate logs, records, and supply inventories while ensuring proper equipment function.
  • Competence in supporting clinical research activities, including protocol adherence and clinical data collection.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Completion of high school or equivalent education.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as healthcare, nursing, biology, or a similar discipline is preferred.
  • Pediatric echocardiography specialty training is preferred.
  • Experience providing education and training to sonographers, trainees, and fellows on echocardiography procedures and interpretation.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple cases, maintain documentation, and oversee supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to build rapport with children and families and provide a supportive, compassionate care experience.
  • Interest in contributing to clinical research and quality improvement initiatives within the echocardiography laboratory.
Work Environment

This role operates primarily within a non-invasive cardiology laboratory that utilizes advanced cardiac ultrasound equipment and portable echocardiography devices. The schedule follows rotating 10-hour shifts, requiring flexibility to support patient care across various phases, including diagnostic, pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative settings. The environment is collaborative and fast-paced, with close interaction among physicians, nurses, sonographers, trainees, and fellows. The Cardiac Sonographer works in clinical areas where attention to detail, adherence to protocols, and a professional appearance are essential, and may move between laboratory and bedside settings to perform examinations and support patient care.
