CLINICAL COUNSELOR

Located at each of the seven colleges, Wellness Centers provide best-practices mental health and psycho-social services to students, faculty, and staff including: crisis intervention, case management with linkage to community-based resources and public aid programs; individual counseling, support groups, evaluation for learning disabilities, wellness education and outreach; and consultation and training for faculty and staff. 

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

Reporting to a Clinical Director - Wellness Center, a Clinical Counselor, Wellness Center provides a range of counseling, case management and outreach services to students, faculty and staff.  Assists with the clinical supervision and training of intern trainees participating in the Clinical Training Program.  Contributes to the best-practices operations of the Wellness Center and participates in promoting a holistic plan of health and wellness initiatives for CCC students. Performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Provides individual and group psychotherapy and other direct clinical interventions to a diverse student population across a broad range of presenting issues.
  • Prepares and plans for therapy sessions. Completes clinical documents in accordance with HIPAA standards.
  • Conducts best practices crisis assessment and intervention and arranges emergency psychiatric assessment as needed.
  • Creates and maintains a professional, welcoming environment for individuals visiting the Wellness Center for services and information.
  • Meets with walk-in clients to assess their immediate or emergency needs, and provides crisis counseling and intervention services as needed. Provides referrals to appropriate health and social service agencies for additional services as required. 
  • Provides short term counseling and coaching to clients to address problems and develop coping mechanisms and skills to deals with issues of stress, time management and organization. 
  • Provides individual and group psychotherapy and other direct clinical interventions to a diverse student population across a broad range of presenting issues.
  • Provides formal clinical supervision to intern trainees, as well as crisis consultation and impromptu supervision as needed. Participates in the recruitment and selection of interns/externs.   (Note: incumbent of position must be qualified to provide doctoral-level supervision to diagnostic and therapy interns). 
  • Serves as consultant to college staff and faculty for student development issues, behavioral threat assessment, classroom behavioral management, and the overall behavioral health of the college community. 
  • Plans, develops and implements educational and prevention outreach and programming in coordination with Clinical Director, especially for undeserved or special populations, and which demonstrates cultural responsiveness.
  • Conducts workshops and professional development for students, faculty and staff on critical topics such as Mental Health 101, stress and time management, violence prevention/verbal de-escalation, healthy relationships, and veterans issues.
  • Utilizes the Counseling Center Assessment Psychological Symptoms (CCAPS) to assess mental health needs of college students at intake and to monitor their progress and effectiveness of therapeutic services. 
  • Represents the Wellness Center and advocates for mental health and wellness on college related committees as assigned. 
  • Maintains case records and data on services provided by the Wellness Center, and creates reports evaluating the effectiveness of services, using Titanium medical records system.
  • Creates and maintains a professional, welcoming environment for individuals visiting the Wellness Center for services and information.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctorate degree (Ph.D., Psy.D.) in Psychology from an accredited college or university, OR a Masters degree in Social Work (M.S.W.); OR a Masters degree (M.A., M.S., M.Ed.) in Counseling Psychology or a related field.
  • Must be currently licensed by the State of Illinois as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), a Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) or a Clinical Psychologist 
  • Counseling experience in a student counseling center within an urban commuter college or university environment is highly desirable 
  • Knowledge of individual and group psychotherapy and counseling theories and practices 
  • Knowledge of case management and coordinated care techniques
  • Knowledge of treatment principles, modalities and techniques 
  • Knowledge of community resources and social service agencies   
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with and relate to a culturally diverse student body, faculty and staff
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
