Position Summary

We are seeking a Generator Field Service Engineer Trainee to be based out of our West Allis, WI office/Milwaukee Service Center.The Generator Field Service Engineer Trainee participates in a structured development program designed to build the technical knowledge, field experience, and practical skills required to support generator inspection, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair activities. Working under the direction of experienced Generator Field Service Engineers, Technical Advisors, and Generator Specialists, the trainee assists with electrical testing, diagnostic evaluations, maintenance activities, and project execution on power generation equipment at customer sites. Through formal training, on-the-job development, and field assignments, the trainee develops the competencies required to progress to the Field Service Engineer I position while supporting Toshiba's commitment to safety, quality, schedule, and customer satisfaction.

  • Participate in structured technical and field training programs related to generator construction, operation, maintenance, testing, and repair.
  • Assist experienced field engineers and technicians with generator inspections, electrical testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance activities.
  • Learn and apply generator electrical testing methods, including insulation resistance, polarization index, winding resistance, EL CID, flux probe, partial discharge, and other diagnostic techniques.
  • Support resonant frequency (bump) testing and vibration analysis of generator stator winding systems.
  • Assist with collection, documentation, and interpretation of test data under the guidance of experienced personnel.
  • Perform handsโ€‘on generator maintenance activities including inspections, cleaning, component replacement, reassembly, and quality verification.
  • Learn generator construction, insulation systems, excitation systems, winding designs, cooling systems, and associated auxiliary equipment.
  • Develop the ability to identify equipment conditions, document findings, and support troubleshooting efforts.
  • Utilize company procedures, engineering specifications, and quality processes while performing assigned work.
  • Prepare field reports, test documentation, and project records accurately and professionally.
  • Support outage planning and project execution activities while maintaining focus on safety, quality, schedule, and cost objectives.
  • Learn customerโ€‘facing communication practices and participate in technical discussions with customers, supervisors, and project teams.
  • Travel extensively to customer sites throughout North America and internationally as required.
  • Demonstrate continual progress toward the knowledge, skills, and certifications required for advancement to Generator Field Service Engineer I.

Education and Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or other engineering discipline may be considered.
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience in engineering, industrial maintenance, power generation, electrical systems, manufacturing, military technical service, or related technical fields preferred.
  • Internship, coโ€‘op, vocational training, military technical training, or handsโ€‘on experience with electrical or mechanical equipment is beneficial but not required.
  • No prior generator field service experience required.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Must be able to be Fit tested with half face respirators
  • The remaining certifications will be acquired on the job

Travel

  • Travel can be up to 90%, depending on the workload.

The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision and Ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.

Work involved a mix of office, shop, and majority in field environments including shop floors and power generation facilities. Requires sitting, standing, walking, and occasional lifting of equipment. Must be able to navigate stairs, platforms, and confined spaces. Exposure to noise, heat, cold, and industrial hazards is possible. May occasionally work in environments where regulated materials are present, including asbestosโ€‘containing materials. All such work is performed in accordance with applicable regulations, site requirements, company procedures, and required personal protective equipment (PPE).
