Recreation Specialist II Starting Salary: $18.46 Hourly

The City of El Cajon is currently looking for Art instructors to teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced level class to children through senior adults. The individual must be a strong role model/leader with strong experience in art and children's classes. The ideal candidate would enjoy working as part of a team, with other Recreation Specialists, to provide a positive and successful learning environment.
THE POSITION:
As a Recreation Specialist Instructor, this position requires the ability to perform a full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Recreation Specialist Instructors receive instruction and/or assistance from the Recreation Supervisor. Recreation Specialist Instructors are able to adjust when new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures, interpret precedents, and adopt standard methods or practices to meet variations in facts and/or conditions. They must have the ability to lead a class independently. Recreation Specialist Instructors are required to have prior related experience.
This position is utilized in various ways throughout the City:
  • Front Office Staff at our Recreation Facilities
  • Art Class Instructor
  • Tiny Tot Instructor
  • Day Camp Leaders
  • Special Event Staff
  • Additional Instructional Classes and Program Leaders
  • Other responsibilities as needed and assigned

Typical Duties
TYPICAL DUTIES:
  • Directing and supervising participants of the Recreation programs
  • Plans, organizes, and instructs classes in their area of specialization within established guidelines
  • Maintaining records pertinent to programs
  • Implementing age-appropriate activities and events
  • Ensuring the health, welfare, and safety of the participants of the program
  • Working closely with the Recreation Supervisor to ensure the success of programs through preparation, execution, and evaluation
  • Assisting staff in organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with parents, community center staff and other key individuals
  • Possess basic computer skills
  • Maintaining a fun and positive attitude daily to create a happy environment for participants
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Ability to work with children and/or adults and give effective guidance to participants

  • Must be able to take direction as well as have the ability to take initiative
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to evaluate emergency situations and act decisively and effectively to resolve them communicate clearly, concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Requires a flexible work schedule that may require morning and evening hours, as well as weekends and holidays

Qualification Guidelines
EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:
Education: Educational achievement equivalent to completion of high school. College-level courses in recreation, education, physical education, or related field is desired. Additional training in area of specialization related to art and/or early childhood development is desired.
Experience: Some experience with recreation programming and leading activities for children and/or adults is desired. In addition, candidate must have some experience in their area of specialization. Experience including background in a variety of art media's, and/or early childhood development is recommended. Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work with participants of all ages is required.
Special Requirements: Ability to obtain a CPR card and First Aid Certificate. May be required
to provide means to commute between work sites in course of work, including the use of personal vehicle during assigned shifts. May be required to possess or have the ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid Class C California driver's license with a safe driving record. Ability to lift and move up to 20 lbs.

Part-Time / Seasonal / Temporary Employees:
This position does not receive any benefits other than participation in the appropriate retirement plan: Nationwide or *CalPERS. El Cajon is not a member of the Social Security System, but 1.45% of salary must be contributed to Medicare.
Nationwide Retirement Plan: The City contributes 7.5% of employee salary to the Nationwide retirement plan in lieu of social security. Most "Part-Time / Seasonal / Temporary" employees will be enrolled in this plan.
*California Public Employees Retirement System (Only available to those employees who qualify for membership): Effective January 2013, the employee will pay the full required contribution.
