What is trailer music?

Trailer music is a specialized genre of music composed specifically for use in movie, television, and video game trailers. It is designed to build excitement and anticipation, often featuring dramatic orchestration, powerful percussion, and intense crescendos. Unlike traditional film scores, trailer music is usually more condensed and dynamic to capture viewers' attention quickly. Production companies and composers often create original tracks or adapt existing music to fit the tone and pacing of the trailer. Trailer music can be produced by dedicated music libraries or commissioned from composers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trailer music composer?

To thrive as a Trailer Music Composer, you need a solid background in music composition, orchestration, and sound design, often supported by formal music education or equivalent experience. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Logic Pro or Cubase, sample libraries, and audio production software is essential for creating industry-standard tracks. Creativity, adaptability, and the ability to interpret client briefs are vital soft skills that set top composers apart. These abilities ensure composers can produce compelling, high-impact music that effectively enhances film and game trailers.

What are some common challenges faced by composers in trailer music production, and how can they be overcome?

Composers in the trailer music industry often face tight deadlines and frequent revisions to meet the specific needs of clients and studios. Balancing creative expression with the commercial requirements of trailer formats—such as dramatic builds and impactful sound design—can be challenging. To overcome these hurdles, successful composers collaborate closely with music supervisors and editors, maintain a flexible workflow, and stay updated on current industry trends. Networking within the industry and building a strong portfolio of diverse tracks also helps open up more opportunities.

What is the difference between Trailer Music vs Sound Designer?

Both roles are essential in the media industry but serve different creative functions.

Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.
THE ROLE
The Netflix Live Marketing team seeks a creative marketer with experience in Live Events, spanning both sports and entertainment. Reporting into the Live Marketing Team, this person will be responsible for the day-to-day execution of our extensive LIVE campaigns across sports and entertainment events.
LIVE campaigns extend across multiple consumer entry points, from core AV and print materials to creative extensions that integrate talent and brands from across the entertainment, music, sports and pop cultural landscapes. This role is responsible for seamless cohesion of creative materials across a multitude of internal Netflix teams, as well as with large and complex external event partners, such as the NFL, FIFA, and other entertainment and sports rights-holders.
The ideal candidate will have direct experience building and managing live marketing campaigns across sports and entertainment. They will be highly collaborative and able to build a relationship with and navigate through a complex network of internal and external stakeholders. This candidate will also have a strong instinct for current cultural trends and a willingness to contribute to larger initiatives related to LIVE events beyond marketing for the betterment of the initiative, on top of delivering core marketing materials that pierce the zeitgeist and drive conversation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead creative strategy, concepting, execution, and production for assigned live campaigns, spanning both sports and entertainment - from initial creative direction through delivery of AV, print, digital, and social assets across Netflix and partner platforms.
  • Translate campaign strategy and audience insight into compelling, talent-forward creative that captures cultural attention and drives conversation.
  • Oversee day-to-day production of campaign materials across print, AV, social, and more, ensuring quality and cohesion at every step.
  • Act as a liaison across internal cross-functional teams - including Production, Product, and Integrated Marketing - to keep creative execution aligned throughout the campaign.
  • Manage day-to-day partnership with external leagues, studios, and event partners, such as the WWE, NFL, and FIFA, ensuring creative materials meet partner requirements and brand standards.
  • Communicate directly with talent and their management teams - athletes, musicians, creators, and more - to build best-in-class, talent-forward creative in support of live events.
  • Execute ancillary campaign beats tied to Live Events, including integration of sponsors, brands, and added musical or athletic talent, as needed.
  • Collaborate with regional partners to localize creative and maximize resonance and impact across global markets.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for external creative agencies, including briefing, hiring, managing scope, and giving feedback on campaign creative.
  • Bring a creative and cultural point of view to broader Live Events discussions, contributing perspective on pop culture, music, added talent, and other cultural entry points.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
  • You have a passion for marketing creative in the Live Events space, including sports and entertainment.
  • You have a proven track record of working on impactful, culturally relevant creative campaigns that connect with audiences.
  • You've worked with live campaigns in a 360 manner, from strategy development to tactical execution (i.e. AV/trailers, digital/social, print/out-of-home and more).
  • You have a strong passion for culture and an instinct for what can drive conversation and pierce the zeitgeist.
  • You understand how to tell a strategic, compelling and cohesive story across multiple platforms.
  • You foster a high level of creative excellence with sharp taste.
  • You are a cross-functional team player who is able to engage, listen and collaborate with internal departments. You seek to be the connector of information rather than the gatekeeper.
  • You possess an excellent ability to problem solve across a vast array of conflicts and challenges every day.
  • You can effectively communicate to executives, showrunners, producers, talent and talent representatives as needed.
  • You are a proactive self-starter, who is resourceful and solution-oriented. You demonstrate strong judgment in the face of ambiguity.
  • You are an independent thinker capable of self-motivating and self-managing, thriving with the level of freedom we offer our employees. Someone open to connecting autonomously with a vast network of collaborators seeking to understand how Marketing can holistically impact our business.
  • You can organize, clarify and communicate complex ideas quickly, succinctly and accurately.
  • You are agile, goal-oriented, driven to succeed and always up for a challenge.
  • You are passionate and curious about all aspects of the Netflix business and can flourish in our unique company culture, reflecting our values and leadership expectations.
