Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, self-driven Traffic Operations Engineer for employment at a client facility located in Detroit, MI. The position will report daily to on-site management and contribute to a team of traffic operations engineers, ITS technicians, and traffic signal system operators. The applicant will need to be professional, self-motivated, resourceful, and able to prioritize multiple client requests. Communication skills are paramount in this position as the qualified candidate will be expected to work with a team on complex traffic signal systems and adapt to changing conditions in a real-time environment.

This position will be assigned to a PM Traffic Operations Engineer shift. Hours are expected to cover approximately 3:30 PM to 12:00 AM, Monday through Friday; however, depending on need, these hours may be adjusted.

Some field work, including visiting signalized intersections and troubleshooting traffic signal equipment on-site, will be included and is expected to be part of this position’s duties. The qualified candidate will be expected to be able to complete tasks independently and unsupervised at times.

This position is expected to begin work on October 5, 2026.

Job Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop actuated/coordinated traffic signal timing plans, developing timing databases, coordinating with agency staff to determine implementation needs/desires, fine tuning new timings, and conducting before and after engineering studies
  • Implement traffic signal timing changes to alleviate congestion and delay due to construction, traffic incident management, peak hour traffic, special events, and areal traffic volume fluctuations
  • Learn and use traffic signal equipment, technology, and software systems to manage the traffic signal network from the operations center
  • Review and evaluate planned and unplanned events to assess changing traffic conditions and altering traffic patterns and evaluate, in real time, potential changes to traffic signal timing as appropriate
  • Collect traffic data from the field, including operational observations, intersection lane measurements, grades, and signal phasing
  • Assess performance of the traffic signal system and prepare various written reports and verbal presentations
  • Effectively manage all assigned tasks and schedules
  • Coordinate effectively with agency staff, contractors, consultants and other stakeholders
  • Interact professionally and proactively with clients and ensure clients are highly satisfied with deliverables provided
  • May require travel within Michigan to serve the project, potential exists for one-to-two-day trips at infrequent intervals
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA/BS + 2 Years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Michigan Driver’s License in good standing
  • Must be able to operate a computer while sitting or standing at a desk for an entire shift.
  • Ability to view and analyze CCTV and other video monitoring equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work all shifts including: nights, major holidays, weekends, and planned/unplanned events
  • Computer proficiency: Windows environment, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook); Microstation, AutoCAD, Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, and ability to maintain in adherence with an organized project file management structure
  • Ability to work calmly and accurately under pressure
  • Ability to communicate clearly, organize correspondence, convey urgency, and document decisions made to project management
  • Ability to meet rigorous attendance standards
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively speak, read, and write on technical topics in the English language
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of self-motivation and resourcefulness
  • Demonstrated ability to develop technical reports, documents, client communication, and technical memoranda
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to a variety of project specific operational policies and protocols
  • Demonstrated ability to professionally communicate with public regarding operational concerns on roadways in a layperson manner
