What is a traffic design engineer?

Traffic Design Engineers are professionals who specialize in planning, designing, and optimizing roadways and traffic systems to ensure safe and efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians. They analyze traffic patterns, design intersections and signal systems, and develop solutions to reduce congestion and improve road safety. Their work often involves collaborating with urban planners, government agencies, and construction teams to implement traffic control measures and infrastructure projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a traffic design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Traffic Design Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering, traffic analysis, and roadway design, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and an EIT or PE license. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Synchro, and traffic modeling tools, as well as knowledge of MUTCD and local standards, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and deliver safe, efficient transportation solutions. These skills ensure that traffic systems are designed to optimize safety, flow, and compliance with regulations.

What are some common challenges traffic design engineers face when working on urban infrastructure projects?

Traffic Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing the demands of traffic flow efficiency with pedestrian safety and accessibility, addressing outdated infrastructure, and ensuring designs comply with evolving local regulations. Coordinating with multiple stakeholders—including city planners, utility companies, and the public—frequently requires strong communication and negotiation skills. Additionally, adapting to new technologies and sustainability requirements is an ongoing aspect of the role, making flexibility and continuous learning important.

What is the difference between Traffic Design Engineer vs Traffic Operations Engineer?

AspectTraffic Design EngineerTraffic Operations Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and planning traffic infrastructure and roadway layoutsManaging and optimizing traffic flow and signal systems
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Civil Engineering, PE license often preferredBachelor's in Civil or Transportation Engineering, PE license beneficial
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, field site visits, project planningTraffic control centers, field inspections, system management
Industry UsageUrban planning, civil engineering firms, government agenciesTransportation agencies, traffic management companies

While both roles involve transportation systems, Traffic Design Engineers focus on creating roadway layouts and infrastructure, whereas Traffic Operations Engineers manage existing traffic systems to improve flow and safety. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Is traffic design engineer a good career?

A traffic design engineer plans and develops transportation systems, focusing on safety, efficiency, and infrastructure. The role typically requires knowledge of traffic flow, civil engineering principles, and relevant software tools, with opportunities for advancement in public and private sectors. It can be a stable career for those interested in urban planning and infrastructure development.

What you’ll be challenged to do:

As a Traffic Design Engineer, you will support design efforts and traffic analysis on projects throughout New York City and Long Island. You will collaborate with engineers, planners, and other design professionals to develop practical, data-driven solutions that enhance mobility and improve safety in both dense urban and suburban environments.

  • Prepare summaries of operational analyses, including documentation of inputs, methodologies, results and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Apply the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), NYSDOT and NYCDOT standards, and other applicable guidelines to assist with signing and striping design, signal warrant studies and maintenance and protection of traffic (MPT/MOT) plans.
  • Evaluate and summarize operational and forecast data for transportation studies and reports.
  • Develop traffic signal plans including phasing, timing, detection, interconnect/communications, and controller specifications.
  • Prepare and review detailed construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and quantity calculations for traffic design projects.
  • Develop Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans consistent with project goals and applicable standards.
  • Conduct field investigations, traffic data collection reviews, safety assessments, and existing conditions evaluations.
  • Utilize software tools such as MicroStation, ProjectWise, and Microsoft Office suite to produce and refine project deliverables.
  • Perform design tasks for roadway and traffic projects from preliminary through final design under the supervision of a Professional Engineer.
  • Contribute as a member of a multidisciplinary project team.

What you'll bring to our firm:
