Introduction

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.\r\n**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations**\r\n

Nature of Work

The\r\nfundamental reason this classification exists is to perform the duties of\r\nequipment operator in the installation and maintenance of traffic control pavement\r\nmarkings and/or signs. Position incumbents are primarily assigned to either the\r\nStreet Striping subdivision or the Sign subdivision and perform the duties associated\r\nwith that subdivision; however, all position incumbents are cross-trained on\r\nthe duties of both subdivisions and can be utilized as needed. Position incumbents assist the Traffic\r\nMaintenance Worker III in training Traffic Maintenance Worker Is and may serve\r\nas lead workers for two to six member crews.\r\nPrimary work responsibilities may include: serving as primary operator of\r\nstriping machines, thermoplastic melting and striping machines, cold laid\r\nplastic machine, and bituminous machines; training TMW Is on operation of\r\nmachines; assisting in the onsite layout of pavement markings for installation\r\nand revitalization projects; serving as the lead worker on sign crews; assisting\r\nin the construction of street and traffic control signs; and performing additional\r\nduties in service to the department. Incumbents receive onsite direction from\r\nTraffic Maintenance Worker IIIs and are supervised by a Traffic Maintenance\r\nSupervisor.\r\n

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and\r\none year of experience at the Traffic Maintenance Worker I level or\r\nequivalent. Must also have at least six\r\nmonths of experience operating paint striping equipment and/or sign\r\nmanufacturing machines.\r\n

Special Requirements

\r\nMust have and maintain a valid driver's license and insurable driving record. \r\n\r\n\r\nPHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to walk on asphalt surfaces for distances of up to 5 miles in one day in order to assist with paint striping and sign operations. Physical ability to stoop, crouch, bend and kneel in order to assist with equipment operation and maintenance, loading or unloading equipment, and preparing surfaces for striping and signing operations.Physical ability to lift, carry, pull, and push equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.Physical ability to lift, carry, pull and push equipment or materials weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance. Physical ability to frequently climb into and out of the bed of truck in order to secure tools or materials, install or remove sign posts, and clean road signs. Physical ability to lift and strike a sign post with a 16 pound sledge hammer using hand-eye coordination and physical strength. \r\n\r\n\r\nWORK CONDITIONS: Work performed involves a moderate to extensive amount of manual labor. Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include direct sun exposure, extreme heat and/or cold, rain, and lightning. Work includes exposure to strong fumes from solvents, paints, and other chemicals. Work involves frequent use of metal, glass, bituminous, and other materials which may cause frequent cuts, abrasions, and bruises. Work is performed in a variety of uncontrolled work environments including but not limited to: in close proximity to heavy traffic traveling at various rates of speed; in unkempt areas with tall weeds and potentially poisonous plants; and exposure to ants, bees, insects, and other local wildlife. Work requires some extended work hours, overtime, night, weekend, and holiday hours as well as afterhours on-call duty. \r\n\r\n
