Description The City Electrician performs skilled electrical work involving the installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of electrical systems for City-owned buildings, infrastructure, and equipment. This position ensures electrical systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations. Work may include facilities, street lighting, traffic signals, water/wastewater systems, and other municipal operations.
Examples of Duties Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, panels, motors, generators, and control systems in City facilities and infrastructure. Perform preventive maintenance on electrical systems to ensure reliability and safety. Install and maintain streetlights, traffic signals, and outdoor electrical systems as assigned.
Ensure all work complies with National Electrical Code (NEC), OSHA standards, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Respond to emergency electrical issues, including after-hours and on-call situations. Follow all City safety policies and procedures.
Perform related duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of electrical systems, methods, materials, and safety practices. Skill in diagnosing and repairing electrical problems efficiently and safely.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and technical documents. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public. Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in varying weather conditions.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED Completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship or equivalent combination of education and experience Minimum of 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience as a journeyman electrician or equivalent Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record Supplemental Information Physical Demands: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds Ability to stand, kneel, bend, crouch, and work for extended periods Vision sufficient to read gauges, meters, and technical drawings Working Conditions Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions Exposure to electrical hazards, noise, dust, and construction environments May require emergency response during nights, weekends, and holidays
