About Sidwell Friends School

Sidwell Friends School is a dynamic pre-kindergarten through grade 12 educational community, on campuses in Bethesda, Maryland, and Washington, DC. Sidwell is grounded in Quaker values of ethical leadership, global citizenship, environmental stewardship, and service. Through our curriculum and our approach to learning, we strive to help students discern deeper truths about themselves and our common humanity so that they may let their lives speak.

Sidwell Friends will open a new Upper School for grades 9-12 in September 2026. It will be the largest building on campus and will feature state-of-the art facilities, welcoming common spaces, and natural light throughout. The current Lower School, in Bethesda, Maryland, has been separated from the rest of the Sidwell campus for more than 60 years.

Starting in the summer of 2026, Sidwell Friends will begin construction of a new Lower School that will incorporate parts of the existing Upper School, with significant additions and modifications to accommodate the needs of our youngest students. The new Lower School, along with the creation of a new central green space that will unite the campus, will open in the fall of 2028.

Position Overview

The successful candidate the Traffic Control Officer position, must be a retired or former Metropolitan Police Department (officer) with experience directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic on public roadways in the District of Columbia.

The Traffic Control Officer supports the safe and orderly movement of vehicles and pedestrians around the Sidwell Friends School DC campus during arrival, dismissal, special events, and other periods of increased activity. This role combines traffic safety, situational awareness, and community service to create a calm, welcoming, and professional presence for students, families, employees, visitors, and surrounding neighbors.

Through clear communication, sound judgment, and consistent application of established traffic-control procedures, the Traffic Control Officer helps reduce congestion, supports pedestrian safety and campus safety by safely directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The officer serves as both a safety professional and a community ambassador, balancing an appropriate public-safety posture with warmth, patience, professionalism, and respect.

Key Responsibilities

Traffic Control and Safety

  • Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic during arrival, dismissal, special events, and other high-traffic periods.
  • Promote the safe and efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians by managing intersections, crosswalks, and designated traffic control points.
  • Assist with maintaining orderly traffic flow to reduce congestion and enhance campus safety.
  • Monitor traffic conditions and promptly report hazards, unsafe conditions, or incidents to the Security Operations Center or appropriate personnel.
  • Adjust traffic patterns and provide direction during emergencies, construction activities, or other operational changes.

Community engagement and Customer Service

  • Serve as a welcoming and professional presence by providing courteous assistance to students, families, employees, visitors, and neighbors.
  • Provide clear directions and guidance regarding traffic patterns, designated parking areas, and campus access routes.
  • Communicate clearly, professionally, and respectfully while addressing traffic-related questions and concerns.

Operational Support

  • Coordinate with Campus Safety and school personnel to support traffic management during arrival, dismissal, and special events.
  • Monitor assigned work areas and promptly report safety concerns, hazards, incidents, or operational issues.
  • Adapt to changing traffic conditions, emergencies, weather, construction, and special events while maintaining safe traffic flow.
  • Perform assigned duties in accordance with school policies, established traffic-control procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Campus Safety Department.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Former member of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) with experience directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic on public roadways in the District of Columbia.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of District of Columbia traffic laws, roadway operations, and traffic-control practices.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with students, families, employees, visitors, and neighbors.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain calm in dynamic, high-traffic environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and stand for extended periods.
  • Flexibility to work during morning arrival, afternoon dismissal, and occasional evenings, weekends, and special events as needed to support school operations.

Salary & Benefits

Compensation : $40.00-$60.00 per hour
