Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
Capital University invites applications for the position of Assistant Cross Country/Track & Field Coach. This is a benefits-eligible position responsible for assisting in all aspects of a successful NCAA Division III men's and women's cross country and track & field program.
Applicants with coaching experience in all event areas are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated coaching and recruiting experience in specific field or combined event groups: horizontal jumps, vertical jumps, multi-events, and/or throws.
The successful candidate will play an integral role in recruiting and retaining qualified student-athletes, developing championship-caliber competitors, fostering a positive team culture, and supporting the University's commitment to academic and athletic excellence.
Essential Responsibilities
Recruiting and Retention (60%)
  • Recruit and retain qualified prospective student-athletes, with a primary emphasis on field and multi-event athletes.
  • Develop and execute a strategic recruiting plan to grow the program in assigned event disciplines.
  • Conduct outreach that aligns with overall program vision in conjunction with the program Director.
  • Coordinate on-campus recruiting visits, including visit itineraries and leading campus tours with prospective student-athletes and families.
  • Assist prospective student-athletes and families throughout the admissions and enrollment process.

Coaching and Student-Athlete Development (25%)
  • Serve as the primary coach for assigned event group(s), based on the successful candidate's experience and expertise.
  • Design and implement annual training plans, practice sessions, and technical instruction.
  • Evaluate athlete performance and provide coaching to maximize development.
  • Support the overall development, academic success, and well-being of student-athletes.
  • Collaborate with the program Director to establish a positive team culture that reflects the mission and values of Capital University.

Administrative Responsibilities (15%)
  • Assist with team travel planning and logistics.
  • Support daily operations of the cross country and track & field program.
  • Assist with meet preparation and competition management.
  • Maintain recruiting records and compliance with NCAA, Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), and University policies.
  • Assist with equipment inventory and facility oversight.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Cross Country and Track & Field.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated coaching and/or competitive experience in track & field.
  • Strong recruiting skills and a commitment to building successful NCAA Division III programs.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel extensively during recruiting and competitive seasons.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet University driving requirements.
  • Commitment to NCAA Division III philosophy and the mission of Capital University.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated coaching experience in one or more event disciplines, with preferred expertise in the horizontal jumps, vertical jumps, multi-events, and/or throws.
  • Experience recruiting successful collegiate student-athletes.
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division III rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor student-athletes in both athletic and academic success.
