What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Towing Recovery Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Towing Recovery Operator, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), a good driving record, and knowledge of vehicle recovery procedures. Familiarity with tow trucks, winching equipment, GPS navigation systems, and potentially roadside assistance certifications is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, calmness under pressure, and effective communication with customers and dispatchers are vital soft skills. These abilities ensure safe and efficient recovery operations, minimize vehicle damage, and provide reliable service to clients in often stressful situations.

What are some common challenges faced by towing recovery professionals on the job?

Towing recovery professionals often encounter challenges such as working in adverse weather conditions, handling vehicles in difficult or hazardous locations, and responding to calls at all hours, including nights and weekends. Safety is a top priority, as they must manage roadside hazards and ensure the security of both themselves and customers. Additionally, effective communication with dispatch, law enforcement, and customers is essential to coordinate recoveries efficiently and professionally.

What are towing recovery services?

Towing recovery services involve assisting vehicles that are disabled, involved in accidents, or stuck in difficult situations such as mud, snow, or ditches. Recovery professionals use specialized equipment to safely remove and transport vehicles to designated locations like repair shops or impound lots. These services are essential for clearing roads, ensuring safety, and helping drivers in distress. Towing recovery can range from simple to complex operations depending on the vehicle's condition and location.

What is the difference between Towing Recovery vs Roadside Assistance Technician?

AspectTowing RecoveryRoadside Assistance Technician
CredentialsDriver's license, CDL (if applicable), safety certificationsDriver's license, basic safety and service certifications
Work EnvironmentRoadside, tow yards, accident scenesOn-site at vehicle location, roadside, customer premises
Employer & IndustryTow companies, auto repair shops, insurance providersAuto clubs, roadside assistance services, insurance companies

Both roles involve vehicle assistance but differ mainly in scope. Towing Recovery focuses on transporting disabled or wrecked vehicles, often requiring specialized equipment and certifications. Roadside Assistance Technicians provide on-the-spot services like tire changes, jump-starts, and lockouts. While they share similar credentials and work environments, Towing Recovery typically involves more complex recovery operations, whereas Roadside Assistance is more customer service-oriented and immediate.

Terminal Manager - Heavy Duty Towing & Recovery

Bear's Towing & Repair, LLC

Burbank, OH • On-site

Full-time

Dental, Vision, PTO

Posted 2 days ago

Job description

This Is NOT an Entry Level Position

Bear’s is a growing towing and recovery company in Burbank, Ohio, specializing in heavy duty, medium duty, and light duty towing, tractor trailer and accident recovery, and off road recovery

We have made significant investments in trucks, equipment, and infrastructure over the past two years and are continuing to grow. We are now looking for the right Terminal Manager — a seasoned professional who wants a long-term leadership role, not a steppingstone.

If you are a rookie, a career job hopper, or looking for a short-term paycheck, this is not the position for you

Who This Role Is For

This position is for an experienced towing or recovery professional who:

  • Has real-world heavy duty and recovery experience
  • Is comfortable being hands-on and leading from the front
  • Wants to help build and grow a strong terminal, not just “manage a desk”
  • Values professionalism, accountability, and doing recoveries the right way

Role Overview

The Terminal Manager is responsible for the complete day-to-day operation of the Bear’s Towing Burbank terminal. This is a working leadership position — you will manage, train, and support operators, and may run calls or respond to major recoveries when needed.

Core Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily heavy, medium, and light duty towing and recovery operations
  • Lead and manage drivers/operators and yard personnel
  • Dispatch coordination and call prioritization
  • Ensure all trucks, equipment, and recovery gear are maintained and ready
  • Enforce safety standards, DOT compliance, and proper recovery procedures
  • Respond to and assist with major accidents or complex recovery scenes
  • Interface professionally with law enforcement, insurance companies, and customers
  • Train operators and enforce company standards
  • Maintain terminal organization, yard control, and inventory
  • Communicate regularly with ownership regarding operations and growth needs

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Previous towing and recovery industry experience REQUIRED
  • Strong knowledge of heavy duty towing and accident recovery
  • Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience
  • Solid understanding of DOT, OSHA, and safety requirements
  • Able to work under pressure and make sound decisions on scene
  • Willing to work flexible hours and be on call when needed
  • Valid driver’s license (CDL strongly preferred)
  • Mechanical aptitude is a plus

What We Offer (Read Carefully)

  • Competitive pay based on experience — not entry level wages
  • Long term opportunity with a company that is actively investing and growing
  • Stable, year round work (not seasonal or shutdown prone)
  • High-quality equipment and support from ownership
  • Real authority to run the terminal correctly — not micromanagement
  • Opportunity to help shape the future of the company as we expand

This is a career position for someone looking to settle in, build something solid, and be respected for their experience

How to Apply

Serious candidates only.

Please submit a resume or detailed work history outlining:

  • Your towing and recovery experience
  • Leadership or supervisory roles held
  • Length of time at previous employers
