Site Description
The Youth Services Center (YSC) is the District of Columbia's detention center for male and female youth, responsible for the care and custody of young people placed in secure detention by court order from the DC Superior Court Family Court Division.
Position Overview
The English Teacher will support instructional services provided to scholars within a secure facility. In one class period, the English Teacher will support scholars taking multiple courses, including accelerated offerings, across the following content areas: English Essentials 6-8, Reading/RLA, English I, English II, English III, and English IV. The role requires flexibility and adaptability in planning and delivering instructional strategies to meet scholars' needs.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Instructional Delivery
Facilitate multi-grade, multi-content coursework for groups of multi-aged scholars in each classroom or on their units. Ensure timely delivery and grading of lessons. Adapt lessons to accommodate varied learning styles, abilities, and academic levels of scholars.
Classroom Management
Maintain a positive, structured learning environment for all scholars. Use restorative practices to support the academic and behavioral growth of scholars.
Collaboration, Support, and Guidance
Work closely with colleagues, leadership, and facility staff to ensure delivery of a well-rounded educational program. Participate in team meetings to discuss scholar progress, share strategies, and address academic and/or behavioral concerns. Communicate regularly with staff about scholar needs and achievements.
Compliance and Reporting
Ensure high-quality instructional materials comply with organization, facility, district, and federal education regulations. Prepare reports (lesson plans, assessments, progress reports, gradebook, etc.) on time and in accordance with organizational guidelines.
Other Duties as Assigned
Tasks that may not directly align with your job description but are vital and serve to maintain a safe and effective teaching and learning environment for scholars and staff.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in education or subject field (required)
  • Must have or be eligible for initial certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain initial certification within 1 year of employment)
  • Experience working with opportunity or justice-involved youth (preferred)

Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area. Compensation for instructional roles follows our established pay bands, which can be accessed from our career page.
