Job Description: Commercial Lines Claims Associate

Job Title: Commercial Lines Claims Associate


Location: In-office in Pearl River, NY or Glen Allen, VA


Reports to: Chief Counsel


Department: Claims


FLSA Status: Salary/Exempt


Job Purpose:

The Commercial Lines Claims Associate role is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the Claims Division while managing commercial liability claims from initiation to resolution. This position requires collaboration with adjusters, brokers, carriers, and internal leadership to ensure timely and accurate claim handling, strong documentation practices, and exceptional client service.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Support Claims Operations

  • Learn and support the day-to-day operations of the Claims Division.
  • Assist the Chief General Counsel with claims-related activities and provide backup support.
  • Conduct client interviews and develop complete claim files from initiation to resolution.
  • Draft Reservation of Rights letters and monitor defense counsel notes, reports, and litigation progress.
  • Contribute to liability assessments and help establish reserves.


2. Maintain Claims Administration and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and organized data within the Claims Administration system, including emails, reserve updates, and paid claims.
  • File and re-label claims-related emails chronologically within the system as necessary.
  • Prepare claims reports for actuaries when requested.
  • Ensure accuracy of financial loss data by cross-referencing monthly bordereau reports from carrier partners.
  • Maintain a running diary and reference document summarizing all open claims.


3. Contribute to Process Improvement

  • Assist in structuring the Claims Division, including developing templates, workflows, and file organization standards.
  • Gain proficiency in ISO and proprietary policy language over time.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to improve operational efficiencies and claims handling procedures.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Adjuster’s license preferred, depending on state requirements.
  • Working knowledge of Commercial General Liability, Professional Liability, Contractor Pollution, and Environmental Site Coverage.
  • Experience within the oil/gas or environmental cleanup industries preferred.

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Exceptional organizational, multitasking, and prioritization abilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and update records systematically.
  • Excellent communication skills for working with underwriters, brokers, and carriers.
  • Ability to manage deadlines and adapt to established workflows and procedures.
  • Strong initiative and accountability with a proactive approach to follow-up and task ownership.
