Senior SQL DBA - Blue Mantis Canada - Toronto

Description
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Senior SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) to join our team. This individual will manage and optimize SQL Server databases for our customers, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability. The role involves maintaining existing implementations, troubleshooting issues, implementing new robust SQL solutions and performing upgrades. Additionally, experience with Ansible automation, PowerShell scripting, Git workflows, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices is considered an asset. This role will entail supporting databases and implementing database solutions for multiple customer environments.
Key Responsibilities
Database Administration and Support
  • Manage, monitor, and support SQL Server databases across all environments to ensure availability and performance.
  • Troubleshoot database issues and determine root cause analysis and corrective action recommendations
  • Implement and configure SQL Server high-availability (HA) solutions, including AlwaysOn, clustering, and replication.
  • Oversee database backups, restores, and failover strategies to ensure data integrity and quick recovery.

Performance Optimization
  • Troubleshoot and optimize database queries and stored procedures for better performance and responsiveness.
  • Analyze database and server logs to diagnose and resolve bottlenecks.
  • Conduct capacity planning and tuning for databases to meet performance objectives as systems scale.

Database Implementation and Configuration
  • Design and implement SQL Server database systems, ensuring adherence to best practices in security, HA, and disaster recovery.
  • Provide guidance and support for installations, configurations, upgrades, and patching.
  • Collaborate with other IT teams and developers to ensure seamless database integration with applications.

Database Security and Compliance
  • Ensure database environments are compliant with data security policies and industry standards.
  • Implement and maintain access control policies, including role-based access and data encryption.

Documentation and Knowledge Sharing
  • Document configurations, procedures, and processes in a clear, concise manner.
  • Provide mentoring and knowledge transfer to team members to increase cross-functional expertise.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience as a SQL Server DBA, with a strong emphasis on high-availability solutions.
  • Experience with Ansible automation is a requirement.
  • Advanced expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (2019 and newer), with experience in clustering, AlwaysOn Availability Groups, and replication.
  • Strong skills in T-SQL scripting, query optimization, and performance tuning.
  • Hands-on experience with database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL databases is a plus.
  • Proficiency in database monitoring tools and techniques to ensure uptime and performance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to articulate technical issues and solutions effectively.
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, and well-organized, with a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.

Nice to Have
  • Experience with cloud-based database services (e.g., Azure SQL, AWS RDS).
  • Certifications in SQL Server or database management (e.g., Microsoft Certified DBA) are advantageous.
