DescriptionThe Automotive Technician is responsible for the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment owned or leased by the County Government. This position will likely be assigned to work at the Department of Transportation Fleet main garage located in Maryland Heights. There will be opportunities to transfer and work in one of four District Garages (Florissant, Ellisville, Green Park and South County near Cliff Cave Park) based on availability and the skill level and experience of the employee.

The starting salary will be $21.49 per hour. A bonus is provided for Master ASE certification hours along with a tool allowance. For snow duty, there is a $6 addition to pay per hour.
Examples of Duties- Services vehicles and equipment, usually of a limited variety and complexity, as specified by work orders using power and hand tools, analysis, testing and measuring devices and garage equipment according to standard procedures;
- Services heavy, specialized and otherwise unique vehicles and equipment under close supervision and assists higher level mechanics.
- Takes corrective action to ensure proper service upon inspection and review of work;
- Performs inspections and maintains vehicles and equipment according to preventative maintenance schedules;
- Changes oil, spark plugs, and fluids, mounts and balances tires, lubes chassis, replaces filters, lights, hoses and belts;
- Inspects electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems; refers serious or unusual problems to higher level mechanics or supervisors; may operate welding or other specialized equipment;
- Conducts routine diagnostic analyses to check and test vehicle parts, systems and equipment using standard diagnostic and testing instruments;
- May troubleshoot equipment failures and initiate minor repairs or advise supervisors of more serious or complex problems;
- Operates automotive vehicles and equipment to observe, check and assess malfunctions and repairs, conduct test runs, or otherwise transport vehicles and equipment for service or outside repair;
- May operate vehicles to assist in snow removal activities and to provide towing and road service;
- Cleans and maintains tools, equipment and service bay work area in a safe and orderly manner;
- Assists with routine building maintenance and garage operations activities;
- Records repair and maintenance information on work order forms to document service activities, requisitions parts, supplies, tools, and materials.
- Performs mandatory snow duty.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum QualificationsCompletion of technical training in automotive technology and equipment maintenance or a related area with one year of experience in automotive/equipment maintenance and repair or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
A valid Class A Commercial Drivers License will be required within six months of employment.
Additional InformationSELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a permanent part time, full time, term or on-call position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
