Your role and responsibilities:

The Tool Room Manager will lead the design, engineering, and fabrication operations of a specialized tool room supporting ABB's St. Louis stamping plants for the motor lamination and parts departments.

In this role, you will oversee the creation and maintenance of carbide progressive stamping lamination dies, as well as associated metal components used in the manufacture of electrical motors. You will manage a team of tool and die makers and 1 tool and die designer, direct all tool room operations, troubleshoot complex stamping die processes, manage capital investments, and ensure adherence to standardized work procedures and quality standards.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Lead and develop the Tool Room organization by supervising, training, mentoring, and evaluating toolmakers, machinists, and apprentices while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, continuous improvement, and succession planning.
  • Direct the design, fabrication, maintenance, repair, and lifecycle management of stamping dies and tooling, ensuring compliance with engineering specifications, quality standards, traceability requirements, and production objectives.
  • Drive operational excellence through root cause analysis, process optimization, and corrective actions that improve die performance, tool life, first-pass yield, equipment reliability, and overall manufacturing productivity.
  • Manage Tool Room operations, resources, budgets, capital investments, inventory, equipment, preventive maintenance, and documentation while collaborating with engineering, production, and quality teams to support engineering changes, reduce downtime, and achieve safety, quality, and performance targets.

Qualifications for the role:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or a related discipline with 8+ years of tool and die manufacturing experience including 5+ years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Proven leadership experience managing tool and die operations and leading teams in high-volume manufacturing environments.
  • Extensive expertise in stamping and tooling processes, including progressive die design, carbide tool fabrication, troubleshooting, maintenance, and tool life optimization.
  • Strong technical knowledge of CNC machining, wire EDM, manual machining equipment, precision measurement, quality control systems, and engineering drawing interpretation.
  • Experience with maintenance planning, equipment lifecycle management, project execution, and capital budgeting in a manufacturing environment.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with a strong commitment to safety, continuous improvement, operational excellence, and managing multiple priorities.
  • Candidates must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
