Job description

Summary

Build and repair all types, sizes, and shapes of jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies. Manufacture and sharpen cutting tools used in the manufacturing process.


Essential Functions

  • Read and interpret blueprints or work from verbal or written instructions or from items to be fitted or copied.
  • Plan set up and operation of all types of machine shop tools, including tool and cutter grinding equipment, considering types of material, tolerances, types of cutting tools, grinding wheels, coolants, lubricants, and machine tool feeds and speeds.
  • Set up and operate conventional and computer controlled machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions.
  • Determine specifications for inspection of work, using precision measuring and gaging tools (calipers, pins, micrometers, etc.) performing required inspection before, during, and after machining.
  • Perform hand operations to fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools. Sets up, runs off, and tests tools to produce a product to specifications, tracing difficulties to their source and correcting same.
  • Select metals to be used from a range of metals and alloys, based on proprieties such as hardness and heat tolerance.
  • Create and/or modify cutting tooling and fixtures for new product development.
  • Heat treats and weld parts as required.
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineer in trouble shooting quality problems in production.
  • Maintain neat and orderly work area utilizing 5 S, etc.
  • Maintain ISO documents and drawings.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships
  • Perform other responsibilities as needed and as assigned.


Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Certificate of completion in vocational/technical school machine shop program
  • 2 years’ experience in operating manual machining equipment such as lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, etc.
  • Working knowledge of cutting tool geometry required
  • Tool and cutter grinding experience a plus
  • Ability to learn new skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work and work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blue prints, drawings, and other related documents
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts, including geometry
  • Requires a very high degree of precision and control in work where damage could be high and where muscular control and delicate touch are required.
  • High degree of attention and care required to prevent injury to self and others when operating machine tools
  • Ability to work as a cooperative and contributing member of the Team.
