What is a TMA driver?

A TMA (Truck-Mounted Attenuator) Driver operates a specialized vehicle equipped with an impact-absorbing crash cushion to protect road crews and motorists in construction or work zones. Their main duty is to position the TMA truck strategically behind work areas to mitigate the impact of potential collisions. They must follow traffic control plans, comply with safety regulations, and remain alert at all times. TMA drivers often work in high-traffic environments and may assist with setting up and removing traffic control devices.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for a TMA driver?

As a TMA Driver, your primary duty is to operate a truck mounted attenuator vehicle to protect roadwork crews and equipment from oncoming traffic in active work zones. Your day often starts with pre-trip vehicle inspections, attending safety briefings, and coordinating with your crew and supervisors about the specific job site requirements. Throughout the shift, you'll need to maintain constant vigilance, properly position your truck, and follow traffic control plans. TMA Drivers also play an essential role in communicating with flaggers, supervisors, and other team members to ensure work zones remain safe and compliant with regulations. This role is vital to construction, maintenance, and utility projects on busy roadways.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the TMA driver position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a TMA (Truck Mounted Attenuator) Driver, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), a clean driving record, and an understanding of highway safety procedures. Familiarity with operating attenuator trucks and knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations are also important, along with any employer-required safety certifications. Strong situational awareness, communication skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help TMA Drivers excel. These competencies ensure not only safe operation of protective vehicles in work zones but also support the prevention of accidents and protection of roadway crews.
