Position: Speech-Language Pathologist
Supervisors: Director of Special Services
Superintendent of Schools
Primary Purpose: Plan and provide speech-language pathology services to students with speech articulation, fluency, voice, or language disorders. Assess students and provide therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce problems or impairments that interfere with the student's ability to derive full benefit from the educational program.
Qualifications /
Experience:
- Master's Degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders from an accredited college or university.
- ASHA Certification. - Certificate of Clinical Competence.
- Valid Kansas License as Speech-Language Pathologist granted by the KDHE.
- Practicum in school setting.
- Skilled in communication (verbal and written).
- Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
- Regular district-wide travel.
- (desired but not required) One year of supervised clinical speech-language pathology experience.
Major Responsibilities
And Duties: Direct Services to Students
- Plan and provide appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with speech and language goals contained in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of therapy services.
- Conduct independent evaluations to assess students with communication disorders and conditions to determine eligibility for services.
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of speech-language pathology services, and implement changes based on findings.
- Screen students for suspected communication problems.
Indirect Services and Activities to Support Students
- Analyze and engineer environments to increase opportunities for communication, and match student's learning style to educator's teaching style.
- Analyze demands of the curriculum and effects on students.
- Participate in school's Student Improvement Team meetings.
- Attend teacher / service provider meetings (planning, progress monitoring, modification to program).
- Design and engage in pre-referral intervention activities.
- Design and recommend adaptations to curriculum and delivery of instruction to adapt curriculum to benefit special needs students.
- Develop IEPs and connect goals to state standards (where applicable).
- Collect and report student performance data.
- Write student evaluation reports and periodic progress notes.
- Monitor implementation of IEP modifications.
- Design and implement transition evaluations and goals.
- Document services to students for special education compliance and third-party billing (Medicaid).
- Plan for transition of students between service providers.
- Design and program high-, medium-, and low-tech augmentative communication systems.
- Engage in special preparation to provide services to students (e.g., low incidence populations, research basis for intervention, best practices).
- Interview teachers.
- Make referrals to other professionals.
- Observe students in classrooms.
- Plan and prepare lesson plans.
- Provide staff development to school staff, parents, and others.
- Program and maintain assistive technology / augmentative communication systems (AT/AC) and equipment.
- Train teachers and staff for AT/AC system use.
- Participate in parent / teacher conferences.
- Communicate and coordinate with outside agencies.
- Participate in professional development and school or district committees.
- Adhere to Board of Education policies and ethical work habits, including confidentiality.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- May supervise clinical fellowship year for newly graduated SLPs, as assigned.
- May provide observational and student teaching opportunities for university students.
- May supervise implementation of speech-language therapy activities by trained SLP paraprofessionals
