Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Carpenter, under the direction of the Lead Carpenter, is responsible for assisting with construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures and techniques conforming to local building codes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Constructs, installs, and repairs various structures and fixtures.
  • Builds concrete forms and erects wooden framework.
  • Installs doors, builds stairs and lays hardwood floors.
  • Erects walls, lays sub-flooring, flooring, tiles, drywall, mudding and painting.
  • Installs pre-fabricated windows, doors, frames and weather stripping and trim.
  • Travels to various locations for project tools and transports work crew to work sites at various locations in different cities.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Follows company safety rules and regulations.
  • Coordinates on site work of laborers as needed and requested by management.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position lifts objects over 100 pounds with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting/carrying of more than 50 pounds.  Physical factors include constant standing, walking, carrying, lifting, pushing and pulling of 100 plus pounds, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, hearing, smelling, near, midrange, far vision, depth perception, color vision, field of vision and bending; occasional travel and sitting. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather, noise and vibration and frequent air quality. Tasks may be conducted during periods of inclement weather including extreme cold, heat and humidity.  Potential hazards include frequent exposure to equipment, and occasional electric shock, high exposed places, chemicals, insecticides, pesticides and infectious exposure. Protective equipment and clothing needed to perform the job includes steel toe boots, safety glasses and hard hats. Tvek suits, disposable boots, dust masks, and full air respirators must be used when working on projects that may present a hazard of infectious exposure.  

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience: Two years of experience in carpentry field required.

Certification/License: Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with the Sault Tribe’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy which may include random drug tests.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Must be able to read blueprints & specifications and interpret documents for safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and policy and procedure manuals. Must have basic math skills. Must have working knowledge and ability to use tools of trade.  Must have knowledge of construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment and materials. Must be able to organize tasks for completion and be able to work independently.  Must be able to handle physically demanding situations.  Must be available for emergency calls on rare occasions. Must be able to travel.  Native American preferred.
