How much do tile cleaner jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for tile cleaner in the United States is $14.80, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.46 and $15.87 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is professional tile cleaning worth it?

A tile cleaner's job involves removing dirt, stains, and grime from tile surfaces, often using specialized tools and cleaning solutions. Hiring a professional tile cleaner can ensure thorough cleaning, extend the lifespan of tiles, and improve appearance, especially for stubborn stains or large areas. The decision depends on the condition of the tiles and the desired level of cleanliness.

What is the highest paid cleaning job?

Among cleaning jobs, specialized roles such as industrial or hazardous materials cleaners tend to have higher pay due to the skills and safety requirements involved. For example, industrial cleaning technicians or hazardous waste removal specialists often earn higher wages than standard residential or commercial cleaners. Experience, certifications, and working in high-risk environments can also increase earning potential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tile Cleaner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tile Cleaner, you need knowledge of cleaning techniques, familiarity with different tile materials, and basic safety practices, often gained through on-the-job training. Experience with floor buffing machines, steam cleaners, chemical solutions, and personal protective equipment is typically required. Attention to detail, reliability, and good communication with clients are important soft skills that set exceptional Tile Cleaners apart. These skills and qualities ensure efficient, safe, and high-quality cleaning results that meet client expectations and maintain property value.

What is the difference between Tile Cleaner vs Grout Cleaner?

AspectTile CleanerGrout Cleaner
Primary FocusCleaning tile surfacesCleaning grout lines between tiles
Required CredentialsBasic cleaning knowledge, possibly certifications in cleaning techniquesSimilar credentials, often used interchangeably in cleaning services
Work EnvironmentResidential and commercial tiled surfacesTiled areas with visible grout lines, such as bathrooms and kitchens
Industry UsageCommonly hired for general tile cleaningSpecialized in grout stain removal and sealing

While both Tile Cleaners and Grout Cleaners work in tiled environments, Tile Cleaners focus on cleaning the tile surfaces themselves, whereas Grout Cleaners specialize in cleaning and restoring the grout lines. Many professionals perform both tasks, but understanding the distinction helps in selecting the right service for specific needs.

How much do grout cleaners make?

Grout cleaners, often working as tile cleaners, typically earn between $10 and $20 per hour, depending on experience, location, and whether they are self-employed or work for a company. Experienced tile and grout cleaners with specialized skills or certifications may charge higher rates or earn higher wages, especially when using professional tools and techniques.

What are some common challenges faced by tile cleaners, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Tile cleaners often encounter challenges such as stubborn stains, mold, and grout discoloration, which require specialized cleaning solutions and techniques. Additionally, working with various tile materials like ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone demands knowledge of appropriate products to avoid damage. Effective communication with clients about expected results and proper safety measures—like using protective equipment and ensuring good ventilation—can help address these challenges and ensure successful job outcomes.

What qualifications do I need to be a cleaner?

To be a tile cleaner, no formal education is typically required, but experience with cleaning tools and techniques is beneficial. Physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently are important skills for this role. Some employers may prefer candidates with a valid driver's license or certification in safety procedures.

What does a tile cleaner do?

A tile cleaner is responsible for cleaning and maintaining tiled surfaces, such as floors, walls, and countertops, in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. They use specialized cleaning agents, equipment, and techniques to remove dirt, stains, mold, and grout buildup, ensuring that tiles look clean and well-maintained. Tile cleaners may also provide advice on ongoing tile care and help restore the appearance of older or stained tiles.
