To thrive as a Tick and Mosquito Technician, you need knowledge of pest biology, safe chemical application, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent, sometimes with state pest control certification. Familiarity with spraying equipment, GPS mapping tools, and record-keeping systems is important. Navigating different types of terrain, ensuring proper use of protective equipment, and safely handling pesticides are common challenges. Additionally, technicians must communicate clearly with customers about treatment plans and results, and may need to troubleshoot unique pest problems on-site. Their work often involves inspecting properties, identifying breeding sites, applying pesticides or other control methods, and educating clients on preventative measures. These technicians play a vital role in reducing the spread of diseases carried by these pests, such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus. They may work for pest control companies, public health departments, or government agencies, and typically require training in pesticide application and safety protocols.
