The Thrift Store Associate is a fast-paced, production-focused role responsible for processing donated goods and preparing merchandise for sale. This position plays a key role in maximizing the value of donations through efficient sorting, pricing, and merchandising practices.
This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a high-volume environment while maintaining quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Donation Processing & Production
- Sort, grade, and inspect donated items (including clothing, housewares, electronics, shoes, and accessories) based on quality and condition standards
- Tag and price merchandise accurately, meeting established production and hourly output goals
- Prepare and organize merchandise on rolling racks and carts for placement on the sales floor
- Ensure fixtures and racks are full, organized, and aligned with company presentation standards
Merchandise Management
- Identify and separate items designated for e-commerce, specialty sales, or clearance channels
- Accurately label and route merchandise to the appropriate departments
- Maintain organized stockroom and processing areas to support efficient workflow
Customer & Donor Service
- Provide friendly, respectful, and efficient service to customers and donors
- Assist with donation intake, including unloading items, issuing receipts, and maintaining an orderly donation area
- Represent Goodwill’s mission and values through positive interactions
Safety & Operational Excellence
- Follow all safety procedures and operational guidelines to maintain a clean, organized, and secure work environment
- Properly handle pre-owned merchandise, adhering to safety protocols and using provided protective equipment
- Report hazards, concerns, or incidents promptly to management
Team Support
- Collaborate with team members to meet daily production and store goals
- Support additional store operations and perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Requirements
Required
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks including lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lbs
- Strong work ethic and ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-volume production environment
- Basic communication skills and ability to work effectively within a team
- Commitment to following safety guidelines and operational procedures
Preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Prior experience in retail, customer service, donation processing, or warehouse environments
Schedule
- Full-time position with availability required on weekdays and weekends
- Flexible scheduling needed to support business operations, which run Monday through Sunday from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Work Environment & Safety
This role involves working with pre-owned merchandise that may contain dust, allergens, or other substances. Goodwill provides training, safety protocols, and protective equipment to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. Employees are expected to follow all safety guidelines at all times.
