What does a thermoforming process engineer do?

A Thermoforming Process Engineer specializes in designing, optimizing, and overseeing the thermoforming manufacturing process, which involves shaping plastic sheets into specific forms using heat and pressure. They work to improve product quality, reduce waste, and enhance production efficiency by analyzing and adjusting process parameters. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting equipment, developing new tooling, implementing quality control measures, and collaborating with design and production teams to ensure products meet specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a thermoforming process engineer?

To thrive as a Thermoforming Process Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or chemical engineering, process optimization, and plastics manufacturing, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, PLC programming, and knowledge of thermoforming equipment and lean manufacturing principles is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, analytical thinking, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and drive process improvements. These skills ensure efficient production, high product quality, and the ability to troubleshoot and enhance manufacturing operations.

How does a thermoforming process engineer typically collaborate with production and quality teams to optimize manufacturing processes?

A Thermoforming Process Engineer works closely with both production and quality teams to ensure that thermoforming machines and processes run efficiently and consistently produce high-quality products. This collaboration often involves troubleshooting equipment issues on the production floor, analyzing data from production runs, and implementing process improvements. Engineers also coordinate with quality teams to develop and maintain process documentation, conduct root cause analyses of defects, and implement corrective actions. Regular meetings and cross-functional problem-solving sessions are common, fostering a team environment focused on continuous improvement.

What is the difference between Thermoforming Process Engineer vs Plastic Manufacturing Technician?

AspectThermoforming Process EngineerPlastic Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsEngineering degree or technical certificationTechnical diploma or certification
Work EnvironmentDesign, optimize, and oversee thermoforming processesOperate machinery, perform quality checks
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing plants focusing on thermoformed productsHands-on production roles in plastic manufacturing

The Thermoforming Process Engineer focuses on designing and improving thermoforming processes, requiring engineering knowledge. In contrast, the Plastic Manufacturing Technician handles daily machine operation and quality control. Both roles are essential in plastic manufacturing but differ in responsibilities and required credentials.

Job description

Own the Equipment. Shape the Process. Build What’s Next.

Are you an equipment-savvy process engineer who loves getting into the guts of a system, solving complex problems, and designing manufacturing processes that actually work on the plant floor?

If you thrive where engineering meets hands-on innovation, this is your opportunity to make a major impact.

We’re looking for a Process Engineer or Senior Process Engineer to drive large, complex, and high-visibility projects, from raw materials to prototypes to full-scale production.

You’ll be the go-to expert for equipment performance, process design, and continuous improvement across the product lifecycle.
