Therapy Intern information

What is a therapy intern?

Therapy interns are students or recent graduates in counseling, psychology, social work, or related fields who are gaining supervised practical experience in a clinical or community setting. They work under the guidance of licensed therapists to develop their skills, provide support to clients, and fulfill educational or licensure requirements. Therapy interns may assist with assessments, individual or group therapy sessions, case documentation, and other tasks as part of their training. This hands-on experience is essential for meeting graduation requirements and preparing for professional certification or licensure. Interns are typically closely supervised to ensure ethical and effective client care.

What types of supervision and support can a therapy intern expect during their internship?

As a Therapy Intern, you will typically receive regular supervision from a licensed therapist who will guide your clinical work, provide feedback, and help you develop your therapeutic skills. Supervision often includes weekly one-on-one meetings, group case discussions, and opportunities to observe or co-facilitate sessions. Many organizations also offer training workshops and peer support groups to foster your professional growth and help you navigate common challenges, such as managing client boundaries or dealing with difficult emotions. This collaborative environment is designed to ensure you gain confidence and competence as you progress toward full licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a therapy intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Therapy Intern, you need foundational knowledge in psychology or counseling, strong active listening skills, and enrollment in or completion of a relevant graduate program. Familiarity with case management software, basic assessment tools, and compliance with confidentiality standards like HIPAA is typically required. Exceptional empathy, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to build rapport help interns connect with diverse clients and support therapeutic progress. These skills ensure interns can effectively support clients while learning and contributing within supervised clinical environments.

FEDERAL WORK-STUDY PROGRAM

Federal Work-Study is a federal student aid program that provides part-time employment to eligible students while they are enrolled in school to help with education-related expenses. Students are paid directly for the hours they work, and total earnings cannot exceed the Federal Work-Study amount awarded for the academic year.

The Financial Aid Office will determine the maximum number of hours a student may work based on their Federal Work-Study award amount, class schedule, and academic progress.

Application & Selection

There is a very limited number of Federal Work-Study positions available, and the number of eligible students exceeds the number of available positions. Receiving this email and submitting an application do not guarantee a Federal Work-Study position.

Please carefully review the available job descriptions before completing the Skills and Interests Questionnaire. Students will be selected and assigned to departments based on their skills, interests, availability, and departmental needs. Students selected for a position will receive a proposed department assignment and work schedule.

Compensation

Federal Work-Study positions are paid at the applicable New York City minimum wage, currently $17.00 per hour.

Work-Study Expectations

Federal Work-Study positions require consistency, reliability, and professionalism. Students are expected to fulfill the responsibilities of their assigned position and maintain their agreed-upon work schedule.

Work schedules cannot conflict with classes or other School-related opportunities and commitments. While special scheduling arrangements may occasionally be possible, they cannot always be accommodated. Students who anticipate participating in a significant number of activities that may regularly interfere with their work schedule should carefully consider their ability to make this commitment before applying.

Continued Federal Work-Study employment is contingent upon satisfactory performance and the ability to meet the expectations and scheduling needs of the assigned department. If a department determines that the placement is not a suitable match, or if concerns arise regarding performance, professionalism, attendance, consistency, or recurring scheduling conflicts, The Ailey School reserves the right to discontinue the student's Federal Work-Study employment.
