Job description

School Bus Driver - Athletics/Activities

The School Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, extracurricular activities, and field trips for the Waterloo Community School District. This position requires strict adherence to student safety, state transportation regulations, and district policies while maintaining a positive and professional relationship with students, parents, and school staff.

This position would specifically transport middle and high school students to athletic events, typically 4-6 hours per route.

High School diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Valid Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements (training may be provided).
  • Must meet all Iowa Department of Education and Department of Transportation (DoT) requirements for school bus drivers, including background checks and the DoT physical examination, prior to driving.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and school personnel.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Previous experience driving a bus or commercial vehicle.
  • Knowledge of Waterloo-area roads and traffic patterns.
  • Training or experience in first aid, CPR, or student behavior management.
  • Maintain a safe driving record and comply with all safety standards.
  • Represent the Waterloo Community School District in a positive, professional manner.
  • Ensure timely, reliable transportation for all students in assigned routes.
  • Good organizational and time management skills

  1. Safely operate a school bus on assigned routes and schedules.
  2. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus to ensure it is in safe operating condition.
  3. Maintain order and discipline on the bus while promoting a safe, respectful environment.
  4. Adhere to all traffic laws, district policies, and state/federal transportation regulations.
  5. Assist students as needed, including those with special needs or mobility challenges.
  6. Communicate promptly with the Transportation Department regarding delays, accidents, or safety concerns.
  7. Complete and submit all required reports, including incident reports, mileage logs, and maintenance requests.
  8. Participate in ongoing training, safety meetings, and professional development as required by the district.
