Job description

Remote – Texas | Central Time Zone Preferred

Contract-to-Hire | Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM–5:00 PM CST

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Financial Applications Support Specialist with a strong combination of financial software, SQL, Excel, application support, systems integration, and project experience.

This is not a Financial Analyst, Data Analyst, SQL Developer, or software-development position.

This person will support financial and business applications and the data moving between them. The role combines hands-on application support with data investigation, integrations, troubleshooting, system enhancements, and project work.

You need to be comfortable getting into the details.

When a transaction doesn't process correctly, information doesn't reconcile, or data doesn't move properly between applications, you should be able to investigate the issue—not simply escalate it. That could mean reviewing the application, examining a flat file, writing a SQL query, comparing records across multiple tables, reviewing an integration, or working with Finance, Accounting, Tax, IT, or an outside vendor to determine what happened and get it corrected.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Provide hands-on support for financial and related business software applications
  • Research and resolve application, transaction, and data issues
  • Write SQL queries independently to investigate application and data problems
  • Work with JOINs, multiple tables, filters, aggregations, and existing SQL
  • Maintain, review, update, and correct financial and transactional data
  • Work with financial systems and the integrations connecting applications
  • Troubleshoot data movement and software-integration issues
  • Work with flat-file integrations and data exchanges between systems
  • Support and troubleshoot APIs and API-based integrations where applicable
  • Use advanced Excel functions for reconciliation, research, validation, and reporting
  • Work with VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, and flat-file data
  • Support application enhancements, upgrades, testing, and UAT
  • Work across Finance, Accounting, Tax, IT, and other business teams
  • Coordinate with software vendors and technical resources when necessary
  • Document application issues, resolutions, processes, and system changes
  • Lead and coordinate projects and application enhancements from planning through implementation

Project & Enhancement Responsibilities

This isn't purely a support-ticket position. The person will also take ownership of projects and application enhancements.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the planning and implementation of application projects and enhancements
  • Working with key stakeholders to define project scope
  • Establishing project goals and deliverables
  • Developing and managing schedules and timelines
  • Understanding and tracking project budgets where applicable
  • Coordinating business, technical, and vendor resources
  • Identifying dependencies, issues, and risks
  • Facilitating communication between stakeholders
  • Supporting testing and implementation
  • Following projects and enhancements through successful completion

We're not necessarily looking for someone whose career has been exclusively Project Management. We want an experienced applications professional who has successfully owned and driven projects as part of their broader responsibilities.

SQL – You Need to Be Hands-On

SQL is an important requirement.

You do not need to be a SQL developer, DBA, or programmer, but you cannot be someone who simply executes queries written by someone else.

You should be able to independently:

  • Write SELECT statements
  • Use WHERE clauses
  • Write and understand JOINs
  • Query multiple tables
  • Sort, filter, and aggregate data
  • Identify missing or incorrect records
  • Modify existing queries
  • Write new queries to investigate a problem
  • Use SQL to troubleshoot application and integration issues

If Finance tells you, “These transactions don't match,” we want someone who knows how to start investigating.

Advanced Excel

This position requires strong Excel skills, including:

  • VLOOKUP / XLOOKUP
  • Pivot Tables
  • Working with large datasets
  • Flat-file data
  • Data comparison and reconciliation
  • Sorting, filtering, and validating information
  • Using Excel to investigate application and integration issues

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience
  • Strong financial software/application background
  • Software applications support experience
  • Intermediate or better SQL with the ability to independently write queries
  • Experience writing SQL JOINs and working across multiple tables
  • Advanced Excel experience
  • VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP and Pivot Tables
  • Flat-file integration experience
  • Software integration experience
  • Experience troubleshooting data movement between systems
  • API experience preferred
  • Project management/project leadership experience
  • Experience leading application projects and enhancements
  • Experience defining scope, schedules, goals, budgets, and deliverables with stakeholders
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability
  • Experience working across business and technical teams
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment

The Person We're Looking For

The sweet spot is an experienced financial applications professional who can move comfortably between the business and technical sides of an issue.

This person understands financial software, but they're also technical enough to write SQL and investigate the underlying data. They understand integrations and how information moves between applications. They're advanced enough in Excel to reconcile and analyze data independently. And when an enhancement or project needs to happen, they can organize the stakeholders, define what needs to be accomplished, establish the plan, and help drive it through implementation.

  • We are not looking for someone who only analyzes financial information.
  • We are not looking for a developer.
  • We are not looking for a pure project manager.
  • We're looking for someone who has spent years supporting financial applications and understands how the applications, integrations, data, business processes, and people all fit together.
