POSITION SUMMARY
The Grade 3 5 Art Teacher is responsible for providing a high-quality, standards-aligned arts program that develops students' creativity, artistic skills, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and ability to communicate ideas through the arts.
The teacher will plan and deliver instruction aligned with Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Arts and Humanities and the instructional priorities of the Octorara Area School District. The teacher will collaborate with colleagues and contribute to a school culture that supports the academic, social, emotional, and creative development of students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction and Curriculum
  1. Develop and implement developmentally appropriate visual arts instruction for students in Grades 3 5.
  2. Design engaging lessons that incorporate a variety of artistic disciplines, media, techniques, and processes, including, but not limited to:
    • Drawing and sketching
    • Painting
    • Sculpture and three-dimensional art
    • Printmaking
    • Collage and mixed media
    • Ceramics and clay, as appropriate
    • Digital and technology-supported art
    • Art history and appreciation
    • Design and visual communication
  3. Align curriculum, instruction, and assessment with Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Arts and Humanities and District curriculum expectations.
  4. Teach students the elements and principles of art and design, including line, shape, form, color, texture, space, value, pattern, balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, and unity.
  5. Provide opportunities for students to develop artistic vocabulary and communicate effectively about their own artwork and the artwork of others.
  6. Incorporate artists, artistic traditions, cultures, and historical periods into instruction to develop students' understanding and appreciation of the visual arts.
  7. Differentiate instruction and provide appropriate accommodations and modifications to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  8. Provide opportunities for student choice, creativity, inquiry, experimentation, and individual artistic expression.
  9. Integrate connections between visual arts and other content areas when appropriate.
  10. Incorporate technology and digital tools into instruction when they enhance student learning and artistic expression.

Assessment and Documentation
  • Develop and utilize meaningful assessments to measure student progress toward established learning objectives and standards.
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, attendance, and other required documentation.
  • Use assessment information to adjust instruction and provide additional support or enrichment.
  • Communicate student progress and areas of growth with parents/guardians and appropriate school personnel.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation related to student accommodations, modifications, and individualized learning needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Art Education, Fine Arts Education, Visual Arts Education, or a closely related field.
  2. Valid Pennsylvania Department of Education certification appropriate for the assignment, preferably Art K 12.
  3. Successful completion of all required Pennsylvania clearances and employment requirements.
  4. Knowledge of current best practices in elementary visual arts education.
  5. Demonstrated ability to effectively teach students in Grades 3 5.
