Job description
The READ Center advances student success and retention by providing reading, learning strategy and college success courses, peer academic coaching, learning strategy workshops, and targeted instructional support. Serving more than 2,000 students annually during the nine-month academic year, the Center offers programs designed to strengthen students' academic readiness and performance.
The Teaching Assistant Professor is primarily responsible for teaching reading and learning strategy courses, developing curriculum, and assessing student learning. Additional responsibilities include departmental outreach, workshop development and facilitation, and creation of learning support programming to meet diverse student needsstrategy courses, developing curriculum, and assessing student learning. The start date for this academic year position will be August of 2026, and will continue through the Spring 2027 semester. Additional contracts past the first year are possible.
Key Job Responsibilities:Learning Strategy/College Success Courses Instruction
- Teach 12 credits of reading and/or study strategy courses each semester.
- Contribute to curriculum development using current educational theory, student development principles, and evidence-basedbased practices.
- Assess student learning outcomes and use data to inform instruction.
- Employ varied, student-centered teaching and assessment methods to meet diverse learning needs.
- Provide timely, clear written, and verbal feedback to support student progress.
- Teach courses at various times as required by departmental and institutional scheduling.
- Review and evaluate textbooks and instructional materials.
Department and University Services
- Assist in designing learning assistance programs for students with varied academic abilities; collaborate with faculty and campus partners to support student success.
- Support the training and supervision of peer academic coaches.
- Contribute to strategic planning and program assessment initiatives.
- Participate in departmental marketing, outreach, and promotional activities.
- Serve on department, school, and university committees.
- Master's degree, preferably in education, reading/literacy, curriculum and instruction, counseling, or related field.
- Minimum Experience Required:Teaching experience at the secondary and/or postsecondary level, typically demonstrated through at least one full academic year of classroom instruction, curriculum delivery, and assessment of student learning in accredited educational settings.
- Minimum of 1-3 years of postsecondary teaching experience, preferably in reading, learning strategy, or student-success focused courses
- Demonstrated experience developing curriculum, including creating syllabi, assessments and instructional materials aligned with student learning outcomes.
- Documented success using student-centered instructional methods, such as active learning, formative assessment, and differentiated instruction.
- Proficiency with instructional technologies, including learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard Google Classroom), and digital assessment tools typically evidenced through regular instructional use.
- Experience providing academic support to students individually and in group settings, such as office hours, tutoring, workshops, or academic coaching.
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting diverse student populations, including prior work with firstgeneration students, multilingual learners, or students with varying academic preparation.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, reflected in clear instructional materials, student feedback, and professional communication.
- Evidence of enthusiasm for teaching firstyear and secondyear students, shown through course evaluations, mentoring, involvement in firstyear experience programs, or studentsuccess initiatives.centered instructional methods.
- Minimum Degree Required: Master's degree in related field
- Preferred Degree:Master's degree, preferably in education, reading/literacy, curriculum and instruction, counseling, or related field.
